Female EFCC official sued for assaulting Naval official

Hello Friends!
...Absolute Power, Corrupts absolutely!"

The Eastern Naval Command of the Nigerian Navy has charged a female offical of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Mrs. Obase Mordi, and her brother, Essien Ewa, for allegedly assaulting their officials.

The command said Mordi and Ewa had on August 27, 2011, allegedly assaulted its personnel, Seaman Patrick, when he attempted to search the accused before gaining entrance into the Navy Officer’s Mess, Calabar, Cross River State.

The Chief Magistrate of the Calabar Magistrate’s Court two, Mr. B.O. Onyam, on Tuesday adjourned the case till April 24, 2012.

The magistrate adjourned the case after the police prosecutor, Mercy Okon, could not produce the needed exhibits and bring Mordi to court.

Mordi had told PUNCH Metro on September 5, 2011, that she lost her six-week-old pregnancy after she was allegedly beaten by naval ratings in Calabar.
But speaking to newsmen shortly after the adjournment, the Provost Marshal of the command, Navy Capt. Anthony Udeagwu, said the matter was reported to the police who arrested and detained the accused and later charged them to court.

Udeagwu said the Navy took the step to demonstrate its loyalty to constituted authorities, saying, “we want to demonstrate that we are law-abiding.”

Also, the command’s Legal Officer, Navy Capt. Ibrahim Chonoko, said in line with the President’s transformation agenda, it was imperative that the Navy pursued the case vigorously in order to protect the fundamental human rights of its personnel.

He said the decision of the magistrate court at the end of the case would determine the next line of action to be taken by the Navy, adding, “we now want to prove that we can also go to court after being assaulted.”
