Wonders, they say, shall never cease. Imagine the tragedy that recently struck the household of former fringe defender of Nigeria's Super Eagles, Obinna Nnodim, who passed on in Owerri. 

Jerry Uche, an ex-teammate to the former Julius Berger football club of Lagos stopper disclosed to newsmen that Nnodim gave up the ghost in a mysterious circumstance shortly after his wedding ceremony with his fiancée.

“Obinna was looking hale and hearty when I saw him few days before his death. He just returned from Thailand for his wedding. We all wined and dined together only to receive the sad news few days ago that he was dead. This is a big shock to me and the rest of us. I just want to believe that there is more to it than meets the eye. His mother has been ill for so many years and to make matters worse he is the bread winner of the family’’,Uche lamented.

Until his death, Nnodim , 31, featured for Arugo FC of Owerri, Julius Berger, Dolphins and Sharks Football Club of Port Harcourt. The high point of his career was when he helped Julius Berger to reach the final of the African Winners Cup now known as the Confederation Cup in 2003.

Meanwhile, Nnodim’s burial which had been initially slated for Thursday has been suspended indefinitely by the family to enable them get to the root of his untimely demise.

Terrorism: Army to kick civilians out of barracks

THE military has commenced the mass eviction of civilians from barracks across the country, Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Azubuike Ihejirika, said on Thursday.

The eviction of non-soldiers from barracks is coming on the heels of two successful attacks by suspected terrorists in the first two days of this week.

Two car bombers had on Sunday struck at the St. Andrew Military Protestant Church inside the prestigious Armed Forces Command and Staff College, in Jaji, near Kaduna. The college houses the officers and men of the Infantry Centre and School as well as the Nigerian Army Peace Keeping Centre .

Also on Monday, gunmen, numbering 40, launched an attack on the office of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad in Abuja, where suspects were being held. Two policemen and one of the gunmen were killed in the incident.

Ihejirika said at the closing of the Chief of Army Staff Annual Conference in Asaba, Delta State, that he had already issued a directive to commanders in charge of military formations to take immediate action in ridding the military formations of illegal occupants.

The COAS also warned that the leadership of the Army would ensure that reported lapses were treated decisively.

The House of Representatives on Thursday ordered an investigation into a “multi-billion naria” mansion said to belong to the Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Mr. Godsday Orubebe.

The property, located at Mabushi in the Federal Capital Territory, was said to have been built for the minister by a construction firm, SETRACO.

The House endorsed a motion sponsored by Mr. Odeneye Kehinde on the matter and resolved to probe the ownership of the property.

The committees on Anti-Corruption, Drugs/Narcotics/Financial Crimes and Justice were directed to conduct the investigation within 21 days and produce a report.

Kehinde noted that the property had been one of the issues dominating discussions lately in the country. He said, “There is no evidence that the minister declared the house in his asset declaration with the Code of Conduct Bureau.”

He expressed surprise that neither the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission nor the Independent Corrupt Practices and other Related Offences Commission had considered the issue important for investigation.

Part of the motion he presented before the House read, “It is saddening for me to have to come up with a motion of this nature to address a matter which ought to have been taken up by our anti-corruption agencies.

Zulai, the first daughter of former Head of State and a former presidential candidate, Maj-Gen Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), is dead.

She died on Thursday evening after delivering a baby in Nasara Hospital,Marafa Estate in Kaduna.

Nigerians only got to know the 40-year-old lady after her death.

Zulaiha, who was born on December 5, 1972, studied at the Department of Economics Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.

She left behind Amira, Moh’d and the two-day-old baby girl.

The former Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nasir el-rufai, said, “May the soul of Zulaihatu, the eldest daughter of General Muhammadu Buhari, rest in perfect peace.”

The spokesman for the Congress for Progressive Change, Rotimi Fashakin, described the death as sad.

Pandemonium broke out in Ado-Ekiti on Wednesday when a young man, suspected to be a bomber, was arrested in front of the Ekiti State Government House.

Punch's correspondent gathered that the suspect was dropped in front of the Government House by a commercial motorcyclist.

The suspect was said to be making telephone calls, which sounded suspicious and attracted a civil servant identified as Johnson.

Johnson, who accosted the man, was said to have alerted security personnel in front of the Government House and the latter arrested the suspect.

Some persons, who claimed to have been present when the suspect was arrested, said no explosive device was found on him. They, however, added that some charms and weapons, including knives were found on him.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Mr. Victor Babayemi, when contacted, confirmed the arrest of the suspect.He also said no explosive device was found on him.

The PPRO said, “Somebody was just trying to draw attention to himself. No bomb or any explosive material was found on him. He only behaved curiously and that caused the suspicion that made people to raise the alarm. No doubt, he exhibited a conduct likely to cause a breach of the peace.”

The Commissioner for Information, Mr. Funminiyi Afuye, told our correspondent that the state government would wait for the outcome of police investigation on the matter before it would make any comment.

The siblings spearhead the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation, which aims to find treatments and cures for paralysis and improve the quality of life for people living with disabilities.

A jobless conwoman pretended to be an air hostess, leading a globetrotting lifestyle so she could keep three lovers on the go at the same time.

Stacey Simpson, 25, lived with her long-term partner while also sharing a ‘love-nest’ with another boyfriend, a court heard.

And as police investigators closed in on her she went on a foreign holiday with a third man.

She told her boyfriends she was employed by Emirates Airlines when she was actually unemployed and conning them and the council out of thousands of pounds.

Her ruse meant she was able to deceive all three men, who were all living within miles of each other in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, into thinking she was jetting around the world when she was actually just down the road with one of her other partners.

Simpson was jailed for 10 weeks at Kirklees Magistrates’ Court on Monday after pleading guilty to 12 fraud charges at a hearing earlier this month.

One of her boyfriends - an unnamed fireman - ended up having two of his properties worth around £250,000 repossessed because she spent the money meant to pay the mortgages.

She then rented out one of the flats to Qatari international student Abdullah Anthani even though it had already been repossessed.

When Mr Abdullah returned from a holiday in February, 2011, he found the locks had been changed and he was unable to gain access to the repossessed flat.

He met with Simpson six days later who convinced him to pay a further £1,000 pounds by telling him that she needed £700 for a month’s rent and £300 for mortgage arrears that didn’t exist.

When he was still unable to get into the property he phoned her and she claimed to be in Singapore working in her role as an air hostess for the international airline Emirates.

Home sweet home: Simpson claimed benefits for a house on Waverley Terrace, Huddersfield (pictured - with blue door), where she lived with one of her boyfriends.

The motive behind the acid bath of 22-year-old Chika Egbo by her estranged lover, David Sulaimon, remains elusive, but one thing is sure, the victim may not remain the same again.

Chika is a student of the Enugu State College of Education.

Last Tuesday, when our correspondent visited her at the Burns Unit of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja, Egbo has become a shadow of the beautiful girl she was.

The substance Sulaimon allegedly poured on her had destroyed every visible skin from her chest upwards.

She mumbled to her father, a Taraba State-based businessman, as she could neither see nor speak properly at the time. When her father, Matthew Egbo, narrated the incident that led to Chika’s state, the story brought tears to his eyes as he lamented that his daughter would never be normal again.

Matthew said, “In March 2011, someone who identified himself as Lekan Sulaimon called me, asking for my daughter’s hand in marriage. We talked a lot and I promised to speak with Chika on the issue.

“My daughter later told me he was the boy she was in love with and said she had resolved to marry him.”

Instead giving her a smooth, plump appearance, the implant has popped out and is left protruding in an ugly disc shape at the back of her cheek.

In the 20-second clip, the unidentified woman slowly manipulates it back into place while explaining: 'This is my implant flipping backwards'.

She adds: 'I don't think an implant's supposed to do that. It shouldn't be able to flip.'

Oops: The video, posted on Facebook, shows the implant protruding in a disc shape at the back of her cheek.

The video has been 'liked' by 278 people on Facebook and shared nearly 20,000 times.

She may have thought that she would not be able to go on without him, but today Mama and her children, despite the storm, have been able to move the vast Estate of the late Archbishop to greater heights. No doubt, the first female Nigerian Bishop and her children are doing excellently well as the church, the Benson Idahosa University (BIU), The Word of Faith Mediplex, the Christ 

for The Nation Bible Institute and the Word of Faith Bookshops are doing well and have continued to grow in leaps and bounds.

Members of the family of the late Publisher of The Guardian Newspaper, Mr. Alex Ibru, are locking horns over the authenticity of the Will left behind by the deceased.

The family dispute centres on 2 Wills with different dates - July 6, 1992 and September 8, 2011.

Another one dated May 22,1989, is apparently not in contention among the family members.

Three siblings of the deceased - Chief Felix Ibru, Miss Grace Ibru, and Mrs. Mabel Okolie (nee Ibru) - are opposed to the one dated September 8, 2011, which the widow of the late Ibru, Maiden, is said to hold as her husband's authentic Will. They insisted that the last and authentic Will of their brother, who died on November 20, 2011, was the one dated July 6, 1992.

The three claimants have therefore initiated a suit before a Lagos High Court against Omamo - a trust said to have been created by Ibru before his death, Maiden, and the Probate Registrar of the Lagos State High Court.

In the suit with the number LD/1776/2012, filed on Friday, they claim that after several protests and opposition by Maiden to the reading of the deceased's Will, on October 31, the 3 Wills allegedly deposited by the late Ibru were eventually read.

Through their counsel, Bimbo Atilola, the claimants seek the court's declaration that the "purported last Will and Testament dated September 8, 2011 and purportedly made by Mr. Alexander Uruemu Ibru" is void and of no effect.

Many people were injured in the Ajah area of Lagos on Monday after hoodlums believed to be members of rival gangs clashed.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the clash was as a result of a long-standing feud between rival gangs in Ilaje and Ajah.

A police source who craved anonymity, told our correspondent that the clash was as a result of the collecting of money from Keke NAPEP operators.

The policeman added that fighting among the hoodlums had become a weekly affair and the police authorities were working on how find a lasting solution to the problem.

He said, “Around 9am, we received a distress call that hoodlums were fighting at Ilaje Bus Stop on the Lekki-Epe Expressway. So, we rushed down to the scene.

“Immediately we arrived there, the hoodlums took to their heels. The violence has become rampant now. Very soon, an armoured tank will be stationed there permanently to deter hoodlums from fighting.”

However, PUNCH Metro learnt that many residents had fled the area until peace was restored.

Boko Haram writes FG asking for dialogue

The Islamist militant group, Boko Haram, has distributed a letter requesting dialogue with the Federal Government.

The letter, which was sent through head of journalists in Borno State, Aba Kakami, came less than 72 hours after a double suicide bombing led to the death of at least 17 people at the Protestant Military Church, Armed Forces Command and Staff College in Jaji, Kaduna State.

Kakami has often received and distributed statements from the sect.

According to an international news agency,Reuters, the letter was signed by Sheik Abu Mohammed Ibn Abdulazeez, a man known in security sources to be a moderate senior member of the sect.

The letter, if genuine, would mark a change of departure of tactics by the group which has been been responsible for many bombings in the country.

Nearly 3,000 people have died violent deaths related to the conflict since the sect launched its uprising in 2009, according to a count by Human Rights Watch. Boko Haram has replaced militancy in the oil-rich Niger Delta over that time to become the biggest security threat to Nigeria.

Communication with Boko Haram , which wants imposition of sharia on Nigeria, has been even more sporadic than normal since the military killed its spokesman, Abu Qaqa, in September.

Britain is in the grip of a winter vomiting outbreak which has already seen many thousands fall victim to the debilitating virus.

Cases of the bug have surged to a five-year high and the health service has reported outbreaks at dozens of hospitals.

Front-line health workers are being struck down by the virus, leaving overstretched departments badly under-staffed.

Experts say the norovirus bug has arrived early this year and have warned the problem will worsen over the winter.

Figures from the Health Protection Agency show the number of confirmed reports of the virus – where samples have been sent by hospitals or GPs to laboratories for tests – is up 52 per cent on last year.

There have been 1,975 cases since July – compared to 1,301 this time last year.

However, this is a just a tiny fraction of the real number because the vast majority of victims do not report their symptoms to their GP. In addition, there have now been 53 outbreaks at NHS trusts across the country.

This includes 45 hospitals which have been forced to close off wards and find space for patients elsewhere while they carry out a deep clean of the wards.

Last night microbiologist Professor Hugh Pennington, based at the University of Aberdeen, said: ‘This year it seems to have taken off earlier than in previous years.

‘No-one can predict what it’s going to do except that we are going to have a reasonably hard time of it, I am sure. It would be grossly optimistic to suggest otherwise.

‘It’s a nightmare because wards are closed, it’s a nightmare because staff are off, who are essential. And it’s obviously a nightmare for any patients in hospital who get it who are already pretty sick.’

The HPA figures show the number of wards closed because of the virus is a third higher compared to this time last year, when 33 were shut.

Norovirus is normally brought into hospitals by patients, visiting relatives or even staff. It is also linked to outbreaks at schools and is responsible for many hospital admissions for young children.

The elderly are also vulnerable because they can become dehydrated quickly and end up requiring more hospital treatment.

Adegoke, who read Mathematics, shone like a star at the occasion as he won other awards and had to shake hands on different occasions with special guests and other principal officers of the university to receive his prizes.

He told our correspondent that the road to his success was rough and challenging as he had to put in personal efforts to get himself through his degree programme at FUTA.

He said, “I really worked very hard. No un serious student can survive the rigour at the Mathematical Science department from where I graduated. I was very prayerful too.

“Right from my first day in FUTA, I was determined, focused and diligent. I was humble too because humility is very essential in anything one is doing.

“I was at the Osun State College of Technology, Esa Oke, for my Ordinary National Diploma in Statistics. I got direct admission to FUTA, doing everything on my own.

40 gunmen attack Abuja police detention facility....

Forty gunmen suspected to be terrorists in the early hours of Monday stormed the office of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad in Abuja, where suspects were being held.

Two policemen and one of the gunmen were killed in the incident, the first of its kind in the Federal Capital Territory which had in the past recorded three bomb blasts.

The blasts were on October 1, 2010; June 16, 2011; and August 26, 2011.

At least 30 detainees, including some Boko Haram members, were said to have escaped during the Monday attack on the detention facility.

But the police denied that terror suspects were among the escapees. They also said that 25 of the 30 detainees had so far been rearrested.

The attack occurred barely 24 hours after twin car bomb blasts at the Armed Forces Command and Staff College, Jaji, Kaduna State.

The army authorities had on Friday declared 19 Boko Haram leaders wanted and offered rewards of between N50m and N10m for information that could lead to their capture.

A source in the police told one of our correspondents that the surprise attack on the detention facility, located around Abattoir, Garki in Abuja was carried out around 2am.

It lasted for some minutes during which heavy weapons were allegedly used by the gunmen.

The senior police officer put the number of the attackers at about 40. “The attackers numbering about 40 came from the bush and attempted to overrun the facility but the valiant policemen on duty repelled them.” the source said.

According to him, one of the attackers was killed and two others arrested.

A mobile police officer, whose name could not be immediately ascertained and a police Inspector, Fakat Zaremi, were killed during the exchange of gunfire.

Emmanuel Domsing, a lawyer, said he was informed early in the morning that his brother, Zaremi, was killed by the gunmen.

Ex-banker bows to pressure, suspends hunger strike

Olubiyi Odunaro, the 53-year-old former employee of Hallmark Bank Plc., protesting against non-payment of his terminal benefit, on Monday suspended his 14-day hunger strike.

The suspension of the protest followed spirited appeal by a representation from the Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Fashola, and officials from the Lagos office of the Public Complaints Commission.

Senior Special Assistant to Fashola on Justice Sector Reforms, Lanre Akinsola, who led a team of legal, welfare and medical officials to the tent Odunaro had turned to his home on Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way, Lagos, promised to intervene.

Akinsola said, “The attention of the Lagos State Government was drawn to the various media reports about the protest being embarked upon by Odunaro and it’s quite pathetic.

“Governor Fashola who was worried about his state of health formed an inter-ministerial committee comprising medical, legal and welfare officials and directed me to lead the team to persuade him to end his hunger strike.

And the flamboyant contestant left thousands of viewers choking into their cornflakes by revealing he wants former supermarket worker and cruise ship favourite Christopher Maloney to scoop the X Factor crown.

Speaking on the Daybreak sofa Rylan, whose broad grin seemed plumper than usual, said: 'I have had my lips redone and my needle hole means I've got a bit of dribble out the side.;

Forced back on topic by Lorraine Kelly, Rylan, who sang the Athlete hit Wires on Sunday's show, Rylan recognised it was the right time for him to leave the competition.

He said: 'I was totally ready to leave the competition. There's four great acts still there and I'm just so, so shocked that I managed to get as far as I did and I'm just so pleased that I did.

Star in the making? Rylan said is grateful for his time in the competition and is looking forward to his next project, whatever that may be...

Talking about his outfit splitting on stage, Rylan told sister show This Morning, 'Dermot got me into a bit of mischief! I ripped my trousers front to back - as Dermot lifted my leg up, I was like 'everything's out'! There ya go, X rated factor!'

One last time: Rylan was seen hoisting Nicole into the air and he thanked her for picking him to be part of the live shows.

When asked about his future and where he'd like this to take him, Rylan admitted, 'I really really don't know.

'But whatever comes my way, I will welcome it with open arms but if it was all to end tomorrow morning and that was the last anyone saw of me I would have a massive smile on my face because I've got the best memories from the last few months I really have.'

And on his prediction for the X Factor crown, the bearded Essex former model said: 'I think Chris Maloney might take it, he’s got such a great following.'

Patients decry congestion at Alimosho General Hospital

Some patients in Alimosho General Hospital, Igando, Lagos State, on Monday decried the of bed space and accommodation at the hospital.

They told the News Agency of Nigeria in Lagos that the hospital had few buildings and beds to accommodate the large number of patients thronging it on daily basis.

NAN investigation at the hospital showed that many patients were being attended to by medical teams outside the wards.Some of them on emergency cases were given first aid treatment outside the wards, fore they were referred to another hospital, while those with minor cases were directed to other hospitals.

A diabetic patient, Mrs. Sabina Azubuike, who was on infusion outside the ward, said that she got to the hospital in a critical condition.

“When my husband brought me to the hospital this morning, they told us that there was no bed space for admission.

“But, when they saw my condition, they decided to give me drip outside the ward– on the chair– to stabilise my condition before referring me to another hospital,” Azubuike said.

The patient said that she was eventually given a referral to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja.

Azubuike’s referral, NAN reports, says, “Patient needs immediate attention, please admit, referred due to lack of bed space.”

Another patient, Mrs Juliana Oche, who brought her 12-year-old daughter to the hospital, said that she was given a referral to the Ikeja General Hospital.

“They did not even check my daughter when we came. They just gave us a letter to Ikeja General Hospital,” she said.

La Liga club, Espanyol, sack Coach Mauricio Pochettino over poor performance

La Liga outfit Espanyol have sacked coach Mauricio Pochettino following the club’s defeat against Getafe on Sunday.

The home loss left Espanyol sitting bottom of the table with just nine points from 13 games and only two wins so far this season, Inside Futbol reports.

The Barcelona-based club last won on November 4, when they came away with a 1-0 victory from a trip to Real Sociedad.

Since then however, Espanyol have suffered defeats against Osasuna (3-0), Valencia (2-1) and Getafe (2-0).

Pochettino was appointed Espanyol coach in 2009, his first job in management.

Lagos civil servant arraigned over alleged N18.3m land fraud

A female official of the Lagos State Lands Bureau, Mrs. Omolara Onamade, was on Monday arraigned at a Lagos High Court in Ikeja for allegedly swindling prospective land owners of N18.3 million.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Onamade, 41, was arraigned before Justice Lateefat Okunnu on 44 counts of stealing, forgery and uttering.

Counsel to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Mrs. Atinuke Daramola, said the defendant, who resides at 5th Ave., B Close, House 9, Festac Town, Lagos, committed the alleged fraud between 2009 and 2010.

Daramola alleged that Onamade collected various sums of money from unsuspecting members of the public under the pretext of securing lands allocated by the Lagos State Government for them.

She said the defendant had promised to secure plots of land for the complainants, who included Pastor Olufemi Fadeyi and Mr. Rashid Adewale.
