Police exhume body of UNIBEN undergraduate...

A police pathologist, Wilson Akhiwu, on Thursday, oversaw the exhumation of the remains of Ibrahim Momodu, the 22-year-old undergraduate student of the University of Benin, who was allegedly killed by policemen.

Momodu was allegedly killed by a patrol team led by, Carol Afegba, a former Divisional Police Officer of Ogida Police Station in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State.

Afegba, was on Wednesday redeployed from office to pave the way for the inauguration of a panel of inquiry put in place by the Edo State to look into circumstances surrounding the killing of the 500-level Laboratory Science student.

The deceased, whose remains were exhumed on the order of a magistrate’s court, and taken to Stella Obasanjo Hospital, was still clad in T-shirt and jeans trousers, at the time he was exhumed from a shallow grave.

Tragedy struck on Thursday at Ikeja Along Bus Stop on Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway, Lagos State, after a heavily loaded 40-foot container truck fell on a government meat van, crushed a passerby, and wounded several others.

Eyewitnesses said the truck had swerved off the road to avoid colliding with some policemen, who were chasing a motorcycle rider, before the incident occurred around 9am.

The victim, identified as Samuel Ogunnaike, was an employee of a popular phone dealer in Computer Village, Ikeja, and was on his way to the office when he met his death.

Any hope that he could survive the accident was dashed after he was trapped for about four hours before his body was retrieved from the wreckage.

The van, Eko Meat Van, with number plate XY 433 AA was leveled after one of the containers fell on it. The driver and three passengers in the vehicle, however, escaped with injuries.

Eyewitnesses blamed the accident on the police.

One of them, Michael Energy, said overzealous policemen, who were chasing a motorcyclist, caused the confusion that led to the accident.

He said, “I was coming from Agege when I saw a commercial motorcyclist, popularly called okada, driving against traffic. He was carrying a man and a lady as passengers.

Chairman of the Senate Committee on Review of the Constitution, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, has said if the committee’s recommendation on single tenure succeeds, President Goodluck Jonathan will sacrifice his presidential ambition in 2015.

Ekweremadu, who is the Deputy Senate President, also said some governors would sacrifice their second term ambitions in 2015.

He stated this in Abuja on Thursday while explaining the fate of the President and some governors on the proposed six-year single tenure amendment to the 1999 Constitution.

The deputy senate President said, “For us, it would have been easy to say let’s put it six years and let whoever wants, including those who are available now, let them benefit, so long as it will help in keeping overheating the system away.

“But we don’t want Nigerians to say that we have colluded with the executive to give tenure elongation to the President and certain governors. That means somebody instead of staying for eight years; he will now be staying for 10 years.

“I think it will be easier for someone to deal with the issue of making a sacrifice than for someone to have the period for 10 years; I am not sure what our colleagues will say. If they say that those who are there now should benefit, that is fine. Those who are currently serving should be able to excuse themselves and say we make this sacrifice on behalf of the system.”

Ekweremadu recalled that the President was one of the persons that called for a single tenure of six or seven years.

The deputy senate president said, “He (Jonathan) was grossly misunderstood. They were saying he wanted to get a third term; he wanted to elongate his tenure and all kinds of things were said.”

He also said his committee did not insert a specific time frame when the amendments would take effect.

Ekweremadu added that the constitution would take effect as soon as the requirement for the passage of each amendment clause was met.

He said, “Since we did not provide for any particular date, it means that as soon as the Constitution is passed, it starts; that is the implication.

Paris Jackson's mother Debbie Rowe, grandmother Katherine and aunt La Toya Jackson rallied around the teenager on Wednesday night following her suicide attempt.

The women were pictured leaving the LA hospital where the 15-year-old is being held on a on a 5585 psychiatric hold, which permits a 72-hour hold for minors.

Both Debbie, 54, and La Toya, 57, appeared incredibly somber after the visit in pictures obtained by TMZ, while Katherine, 83, left in the back seat of a chauffeur-driven car. They all left separately.

There was no sign of Paris' siblings Prince Michael, 16, or Blanket, 13, nor other members of the Jackson clan. (Prince Michael canceled a scheduled appearance on German television on Thursday, following his sister's troubles.)

The women all made public statements about Paris yesterday, with Debbie admitting daughter has had 'a lot going on lately'.

Paris has recently begun developing a relationship with her biological mother, who relinquished her custody rights to Paris and Prince following her divorce from the Bad singer in 1999.

Her grandmother and legal co-guardian Katherine has been very supportive of Paris' decision to reach out Debbie amid her personal turmoil.

Corps members protest unpaid allowance...

Members of 2012 Batch B National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) serving in Nasarawa on Wednesday protested the non-payment of their one year allowances by the state.

The corps members, who converged on the Keffi-Abuja road carrying leaves and placards barricaded and obstructed traffic for so many hours.

It took the intervention of the Nasarawa State Commissioner for Education, Mr Hussaini Abubakar, who addressed them to bring the situation under control.

The Commissioner, who ordered that the allowances be paid immediately said he would not leave the scene until the last person was paid.

“The payment of their allowances will commence immediately even if it will take us to 1:00pm.

“I will not move an inch from here, not to talk of leaving you until everybody receives his/her allowances,” he said.

He said the state governor, Alhaji Umaru Al-Makura, had approved over N100 million for the payment of the allowances, and that the government should not be blamed for what happened.

He said the delay was due to the late submission of the list of names of the corps members to the ministry by the NYSC officials.

The Commissioner also blamed the activities of some unpatriotic citizens who collaborated to cause confusion.

Abubakar warned those involved in causing the problems to desist from such acts or be ready to face the wrath of the law.

He said that government would not hesitate to punish anyone found culpable noting that their selfish act had caused embarrassment for the state.

The protesting corps members told newsmen that they were being owed 12 months allowances.

Delegates for a private conference of top politicians and business people from around the world have started to arrive at a luxury country hotel.

Several cars with blacked-out windows entered the gates of the Grove Hotel, near Watford, in Hertfordshire, this morning for the secretive meeting of the Bilderberg Group.

It is thought billionaire executives from multinational companies such as Amazon and Google, high-ranking political figures including Chancellor George Osborne, and even members of royal families are among the 130 or so attendees.

Famous for being shrouded in secrecy, the Bilderberg conference is taking place in Britain for the first time since 1998 and conspiracy theorists believe this is where leaders plot world domination.

Every year some of the world’s richest people gather together at the Bilderberg Group meeting to plot how they will continue to usher in the New World Order Illuminati agenda.

Court Jails Woman 5 Years for Cannibalism...

Itu High Court in Itu Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State, has sentenced a 30-year-old woman, Mrs. Blessing Edet, to five years for cannibalism.

Edet had on December 29, 2010, during a brawl, bit the ear of her neighbour, Mrs. Edidiong Edet, chewed and swallowed the same.

Edet and Edidiong were living in the same house at Enen Afaha Itam area of the state.
The presiding judge, Justice Godwin Abraham, condemned the act by Edet, describing it as barbaric. He warned her to desist from criminal activities.

Abraham, before pronouncing the jail term on Edet, said the accused committed the offence and caused grievous bodily harm to the victim contrary to Section 344 of the Criminal Code 2000 Law of Akwa Ibom State.

Abraham said, “This honourable court, hereby sentences the accused person, Mrs. Blessing Edet, to a five-year jail term as a first offender. This will serve as a deterrent to others.”

The convict remained impassive during the proceeding and after the judgement. Her husband, Ifiok, handed their one-year-old baby to Blessing to serve prison term with her.

Meanwhile, three other persons accused of murdering Captain Eno Udoh (retd) have been remanded in prison custody till June 27, 2013.

Nnamso Okon, Victor Elijah and one unidentified person were alleged to have conspired and murdered Udoh in September 30, 2010.


They, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Senate stops N4bn first ladies’ mission house project...

The Senate on Wednesday dropped the controversial African First Ladies’ Peace Mission House project when it passed the N259.65bn budget of the Federal Capital Territory for the 2013 fiscal year without approving the N4bn appropriated for it.

In February when the budget proposal was brought to the National Assembly, it contained N4bn vote for the construction of the mission house in Abuja, a development that attracted a lot of criticisms from members of the public.

The Senate, during the second reading of the bill, questioned the rationale of committing scarce resources to prosecute a less important structure.

Civil rights groups and political parties had also berated the Federal Capital Territory Administration for budgeting N4bn for the construction of the building for a non-governmental body headed by the wife of the President, Mrs. Patience Jonathan.

They had contended that since the Federal Government had earlier declared the mission as a non-governmental organisation, it would be inappropriate for the same government to spend public funds on it.

Presenting the budget report on Wednesday, the Chairman, Senate Committee on FCT, Senator Smart Adeyemi, said, “It is worthy of note that the proposed appropriation for the construction of building for the African First Ladies’ Peace Mission has been distributed to meet pressing needs in the area of engineering and satellite towns.”

The announcement online was the latest addition of stars, who include Ashton Kutcher and Leonardo DiCaprio, who have paid the $250,0000 deposit fee to get priority for the flights when the program becomes available.

The hefty price is no issue for Justin who’s net worth is estimated at $110 million, thanks to the success of songs such as Baby and the adulation of millions of fans - known as Beliebers.

Doing it together: Justin will be traveling with his manager and close friend Scooter Braun...

The Virgin Galactic programme might not be flying just yet, but the 600 astronauts who are part of the program are in an elite group. 

Offering up attractions on earth, there will be plenty of interesting opportunities as the date becomes closer.

Paris Jackson's best friend has spoken of her shock following the teenager's apparent suicide bid - revealing she was left 'shaking' after hearing the news.

Sophie Jastrow made her comments as it became clear that Paris, 15, had been under immense strain recently after being forced to defend her newly-forged relationship with her mother Debbie Rowe.

The schoolgirl tweeted: 'so f***in sad right now...litdraally (sic) shaking right now...literally i cant even focus.'

Joline Nehoray, another of Paris's friends and a fellow student at the private Buckley school in California, added: 'So heartbroken. Stay strong.'

Paris posted pictures of her and Sophie together at Debbie's California home last month, adding: 'Ok so I realized that Sophie became my best friend and i love her so much.'

Writing on her ask.fm site, Paris added: 'So i realized dat some ppl dont like my mom and im getting hateful comments about sayin obviously rude things about my mom and i won't let that okay? 

'I am bonding good with her and like i said we are really strong relationship and nobody's gonna stop me from that (: x yes Prince still isn't ready idk why but he will meet her too (: i hope so no hate! xx '

The teen had revealed that she was back in touch with her mom, writing: 'So on my birthday, I hung out with my mom because of course, haven't seen her since... a long time ago. So glad I bonded with my mother. It's like we have this really strong relationship and did I mention, I kind of look like her. It was so amazing to see my mother after all these years. Love her.'

But when one critic said her mom was only out to use her, Paris replied: 'Well wtf are u messing in my life? 

'Stfu im sick of ppl like u who are saying that! She wasn't in my life around 15 years but now as i said we became close and i know that she wouldn't use me cuz im her daughter kay?'

Paris was taken from her Calabasas family home on a stretcher at around 2am on Wednesday and conveyed to a nearby hospital, according to TMZ.

My Thoughts: This is indeed a quite but aggressive cry for help and adequate attention from a child who obviously has gone through too much in her young life... The Jackson family does not strike me as a closely knitted and loving family - every family member seems to be fighting one demon or the other. They were never really present to help when MJ had his troubles and now, these almost similar troubles are being experienced by his daughter...

It's really sad that what people take for granted and ignore, is the need to give attention to children especially teenagers who have the tendencies to "break and lose themselves". Paris should be given the relevant counselling/therapy and re assured that she is unique and strong enough to overcome any troubles she might face in life.  

Most especially, all of her uncles and aunties and especially her guardian/grandmother - Katherine Jackson, must re assure her of their support and love....

Sadly, the signs are there...Let these bad signs not become horrible realities and ultimately another sad loss...

She tragically attempted to take her own life on Wednesday afternoon by cutting her wrists and taking an overdose of drugs.

But it appears that Paris Jackson’s cry for help may have started some time ago.

In previously published pictures, the 15-year-old daughter of late singer Michael Jackson was seen six weeks ago with a crop of scars on her forearm – which appear to suggest she has been self-harming.

Lines of marks - typically associated with self-harming - can be seen coursing down the teenager's arm from her wrist and almost reaching her elbow.

In the light of Paris's suicide bid, it would appear that the teenager had been in need of support for some weeks in the lead-up to the attempt. 

The latest tragic turn her relatively short life is somewhat unsurprising given the personal struggles she has endured over the course of the last few years.

Not only did the teen lose her superstar father prematurely when he passed away in 2009, but she has also had to put up with a great deal of criticism surrounding her recent re connection with her birth mother. 

Paris began rebuilding her relationship with her mother, who signed custody of her children over to Michael after her divorce from the singer in 1999, following her father's tragic passing in 2009.

However, her elder brother Prince, 16, is said to have been less than understanding about Paris' desire to reconnect with their absent parent, causing a rift between the siblings.

A source told E! News: 'It's been a very difficult time. Paris has wanted Debbie in her life... She's a young girl and having a female mother figure has been something she has desired for as long as she can remember, but it has caused problems in the family.

Yesterday, Dawson was told she would escape a custodial sentence after earlier admitting having sex with the 17-year-old boy in the front seat of her car last December.

She will have to return to court to learn her fate next month, but a sheriff told her she had breached a position of trust, although she had not abused anyone.

Sheriff George Jamieson added: 'You were there simply to teach but you have been called into temptation and you have committed adultery – your marriage is gone, and your career as a teacher is gone.

'What you have been charged with is breach of trust, and I cannot see that there is anything to be gained by a custodial sentence. 

'Had it not been for the fact that you were this young man's teacher, there would have been no criminality.'

Dawson, of Dumfries, will return to court on July 10 to find out what counselling and help is available through social work services and to give her a chance to attend psycho-sexual counselling.

Sheriff Jamieson said it was likely she would be made the subject of a community payback order, but it had not yet reached that stage.

Earlier this year, Dawson admitted that on December 21 last year, while she was in a position of trust and being the teacher of the youth, she engaged in sexual activities with, or directed towards, a person under the age of 18 and that she had sexual intercourse with him.

The court heard earlier that she had picked up the pupil in Dumfries, drove to a secluded layby on the Cummertrees to Hoddam Road.

Police noticed the car and, as they approached, they saw condensation on the windows. 

When they approached the parked car, they knocked on the car door and saw the accused and a male, both naked from the waist down, having sexual intercourse.

Tulisa Contostavlos was today arrested on suspicion of supplying class A drugs.

The 24-year-old former X Factor judge was arrested along with her 35-year-old friend, rapper Mike GLC, by appointment at a central London police station and later bailed pending further inquiries.

It comes after police officers were said to be 'considering' information after a newspaper suggested she had acted as a go-between in a drug deal by introducing a journalist to an alleged supplier.

From the size of her bump it's clear Kim Kardashian's due date can't be far off.

So the reality star is sure to be quietly delighted that she has FINALLY been granted a divorce from Kris Humphries.

During a court hearing in Los Angeles on Monday night a judgement was entered officially bringing the disastrous marriage to an end.

Kim can now move on, which with her first baby due in around a month's time couldn't be better timing.

Kim made no mention of the divorce on her blog, instead posting a photo of herself in her outfit for her baby shower, which took place in Beverly Hills at the weekend.

'Sunday’s Lanvin Look!' she wrote, showing off her bump in the flattering loose long-sleeved gown.

Following her separation Kim began dating pop star Kanye West, quickly falling pregnant with a baby girl, believed to be due in July.

She has spoken of the stress of negotiating a divorce while pregnant, admitting she was worried Kanye's baby would be born while she remained married to another man.

The divorce comes more than a year after Kim called a halt to the marriage after just 72-days.

Basketball star Kris initially refused to agree to a divorce, instead insisting that the marriage be annulled because it was' fraud'.

He claimed Kim faked her love for him to increase ratings for her reality show, Keeping Up With The Kardashians, on which their romance featured prominently.

The judgement, reported on People.com, followed long negotiations between the pair's lawyers, which finally led to them reaching a settlement in April.

While the terms of the settlement are not known the pair did sign a prenuptial agreement, detailing their financial obligations in the case of a split.

The President/Chief Executive of the pan-African conglomerate, the Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote, has become the first African entrepreneur to lay claim to a $20bn fortune, thus becoming one of the 25 richest men in the world.

This is on account of the stock value of his largest holding, Dangote Cement, leaping about three-fourths since March when Forbes released its annual ranking of the world’s richest people.

Dangote’s 93 per cent stake in the cement company is now worth $19.5bn, according to the magazine.

Dangote Cement becomes the first Nigerian company to achieve a market capitalisation of over $20bn.

Added to this are his controlling stakes in other publicly-listed companies like Dangote Sugar and National Salt Company of Nigeria, and his significant shareholdings in other blue-chip companies like Zenith Bank Plc, UBA Group and Dangote Flour; his extensive real estate portfolio, jets, yachts and current cash position, which includes more than $300m in recently-awarded Dangote Cement.

Last Sunday’s convocation of Babcock University, Ilisan-Remo, Ogun State, was a potpourri of emotions. For some, it was expectedly exciting. Shouts of joy, mixed with backslapping and hugging, were not in short supply.

But while most of the graduating students had cause to rejoice and shed tears of joy, two of the graduating students and their family members, who managed to grace the occasion, were grief-stricken. But, first, the story of joy.

At the carnival-like 11th convocation, 1,359 students were awarded first degrees. Twenty got postgraduate diplomas, 71 obtained Master’s degrees in various disciplines while another set of 41 got PhD degrees in various disciplines.

The cynosure of all eyes were, however, a 20-year-old lady, Omobola Oduyoye, who emerged the best graduating student after scoring a Cumulative Grade Point Average of 4.92, and Nuhu Benjamin, who won the President’s Award for securing the overall best performances in leadership, academics, community and spiritual services.

Oduyoye, an indigene of Ilisan-Remo, Ikenne Local Government Area of the state, was awarded a first class degree in Public Health, while Nuhu also got a first degree in Christian Religious Studies.

Speaking with our correspondent after she received the Senior Vice-President’s Prize as the graduate with the highest overall CGPA, Oduyoye said commitment, discipline, hard work and focus – combined with what she called God’s grace – fetched her the award.

“Motivation from my parents, lecturers and course mates also helped me. Healthy competition from my course mates such as Akomolafe Damilola, who also obtained a CGPA of 4.60 , also enhanced my performance.

Man transmits DSTV signal to 500 homes...

The Nigerian Copyright Commission has arrested one Mr. Ubong Obot for illegally transmitting broadcast signals of Multichoice (DSTV) to an estimated 500 houses in Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State.

Obot is said to have installed the DSTV signals to different homes for N5,000 and charged N1,000 per month as subscription fee. Uyo Liaison Officer, NCC, Mr. Amudipe Charles, who represented the Director-General, NCC, Mr. Afam Ezekude, told journalists in Uyo on Monday that Obot was arrested with the equipment he used to transmit the cable television signals illegally.

Ezekude said,“The operatives of the NCC have raided Obot’s house over illegal transmission of cable television signals in Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State.

“Illegal transmitting decoders, transmission boosters, rolls of installation wires, and other accessories worth N20m were impounded during the raid at two different locations. The locations are No. 89 Atan Road, 32 Umuahia Road, Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State.

“Investigation into the case continues and appropriate action will be taken on conclusion of investigation.” He stated that Obot, who operated as Botex Integrated Service, was arrested based on intelligence and surveillance reports during an anti-piracy operation.

He added that the operatives of the NCC had also on June 1, 2013 arrested four pirates and confiscated an estimated N3.2m worth of copyright infringing products during an antipiracy operation in Uyo metropolis.

Ezekude stated that the anti-piracy raid was carried out in four outlets dealing in suspected pirated products located on 2, Abak Road; 29, Abak Road; 30, Oron Road and 37, Oron Road, Uyo.

Hollywood actor Michael Douglas has claimed that his throat cancer was caused by performing oral sex on women.

The star, who fought a six month battle with the disease from August 2010 until January 2011, had initially believed that it was his years of smoking and drinking that had lead to the illness.

However, in a new interview the 68-year-old said that the particular strain he had suffered with was caused by human papilloma virus (HPV), the most common sexually transmitted disease in the U.S..

Last year Cancer Research UK said that the rising rates of HPV-positive cases of oral cancer could be linked to oral sex. World Health Organisation figures have also linked HPV to more than 5 per cent of cancers worldwide.

HPV can be passed between men and women by genital contact, most often during vaginal and anal sex. It may also be passed on during oral sex and genital-to-genital contact. HPV can be passed on between straight and same-sex partners - even when the infected person shows no symptoms.

Douglas made the frank admission about how he developed the illness during an interview with The Guardian newspaper when he was asked if he had regretted smoking and drinking in the past.

Douglas candidly replied: 'No. Because without wanting to get too specific, this particular cancer is caused by HPV, which actually comes about from cunnilingus.' 

Douglas, who is married to Welsh actress Catherine Zeta-Jones, was diagnosed with cancer in August 2010 after a walnut-sized tumour was found on his tongue.

His health troubles started just a few months after his eldest son Cameron - from his first marriage to Diandra Luker - was jailed for drug possession and dealing.

The actor admitted he initially believed his disease had been triggered by the stress over his son's legal troubles.

He explained: 'I did worry if the stress caused by my son's incarceration didn't help trigger it. 

'But yeah, it's a sexually transmitted disease that causes cancer. And if you have it, cunnilingus is also the best cure for it.'

Douglas was diagnosed with stage four of the disease and underwent an intense course of chemotherapy and radiation.

Bruno Mars is grieving the sudden passing of his mother Bernadette Hernandez.

Hernandez, 55, died on Saturday after suffering a brain aneurysm.

She lived in Honolulu with Mars’ dad, Peter, where the singer was raised with his five siblings.

At 4-years-old, Mars recorded the song “I Love You Mom” in honor of his mother, with the track getting an iTunes release years later.

Mars has not yet commented on the loss, though he is still expected to start his world tour on June 22.

Brad Pitt Says He Suffers From ‘Face Blindness?"

Only weeks after his wife went public with the news she’d undergone a preventative double mastectomy, now Brad Pitt tells Esquire Magazine that he may suffer from “face blindness  or prosopagnosia. 

He has not been diagnosed with the disorder, but says he finds his inability to remember people’s faces so profound, he’d like to be tested.

“So many people hate me because they think I’m disrespecting them,” he said to Esquire. He told the publication that many people think he’s being conceited when he can’t recall them from a prior meeting.

Between six to eight million people suffer with face blindness in the US alone. When very severe, people aren't able to remember the faces of family members.

Even telling people about his condition doesn't help. “It just got worse. People were more offended,” Pitt said. “You get this thing like ‘You’re being egotistical. You’re being conceited.’ But it’s a mystery to me, man. I can’t grasp a face, and yet I come from such a design/aesthetic point of view,” Pitt continued.

Libya to Appeal ICC Ruling to Hand over Gaddafi's Son...

Libya will appeal a ruling by the International Criminal Court to hand over Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, the son of former ruler Muammar Gaddafi, to the tribunal, the justice minister said on Sunday.

"We will give what is needed to convince the ICC that Libya is capable of conducting a fair trial in accordance with international standards," the state LANA news agency quoted Justice Minister Salah al-Marghani as saying.

Libya has challenged the ICC's right to put Saif al-Islam on trial on the grounds that since it is planning its own proceedings, the international court in The Hague had no jurisdiction because it should intervene only if the local legal system is not up to the task, reports Reuters.

"Libya will appeal the decision ... A team of Libyan and international experts is working on preparing the appeal," al-Marghani was quoted as saying.

Few expect Libya to surrender Saif al-Islam to the ICC, which wants to try him for alleged crimes committed during the 2011 uprising that toppled his father.

ICC judges on Friday rejected Libya's position, saying Libyan government lawyers had not proved their authorities were investigating the same crimes as the international prosecutors.

They also questioned whether Libya had full custody over Saif al-Islam, something they would need if they were to try him. The British-educated 40-year-old is in the custody of his rebel captors in the western mountain city of Zintan, where the Libyan government's authority is weak.

In conjunction with our partners in the United States, we have filed a mass tort law suit against the parties responsible for the crash. Dana Air and its insurers, Prestige Assurance PLC and Lloyds of London have retained the law firm of Yomi Osikoya & Co. to help them process claims and interim compensation to victims of the Dana crash.

You will recall from our past press conferences that we highlighted the enabling law, which is the pivot upon which our letter to the Senate committee and House committee on aviation rests. Section 48 (3) of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Act provides: 

“In any case of aircraft accident resulting in death or injury of passengers, the carrier shall make advance payments of at least US $30,000 (Thirty Thousand United States Dollars) within 30 (thirty) days from the date of such accident, to the natural person or such natural persons who are entitled to claim compensation in order to meet the immediate economic needs of such persons and such advance payments shall not constitute recognition of liability and may be offset against any amounts subsequently paid as damages by the carrier.”

Consequently, Dana Airlines is mandated to pay $30,000 within the stipulated time of 30 days. Unfortunately, most of the families of the victims are yet to be paid the $30,000 a year after the air crash. Out of our 40 clients, for example, only 14 clients have received the interim payment while 26 remain unpaid. This conflicts with the express provisions of the Civil Aviation Act, which clearly states that interim compensation should be paid within 30 days of the plane crash.

Tears as family, friends remember Dana crash victim...

Emotions ran high on Sunday as hundreds of family and friends of a Dana crash victim, Adekunbi Adebiyi, attended a Christian music concert organised in her honour.

The event, which held at Agip Hall of the Muson Centre, Lagos, was well attended. The gathering was characterized by singing, instrumental performances as well as a powerpoint picture presentation of the deceased’s life and times.

Some of the deceased’s friends were clad in yellow shirts, with the inscription, ‘One year on, KIA (Kunbi Irene Adebiyi) in our hearts.’

Some of the deceased’s friends, who paid tributes to her, described her as a God-fearing and lovable person.

One of them, Olumide Omololu, described her as an ambitious girl who once dreamt of becoming Nigeria’s first female President.

Omololu said, “Kunbi and I grew up together and we were very close. I saw her two months before she died. We were also business partners. She was an entreprenuer.

“She was ahead of her time and always strives for the best and she even told me that she wanted to be the first female president of Nigeria.”

Another friend, Solape Ope, said was one of the last people to speak with the deceased before the plane crash.
