Africa Magic in trouble with Nigerian movie marketers

This is some interesting news...
As the quest to strengthen the Nigerian movie industry intensifies, industry patrons are taking steps to ensure that investments bring maximum returns.

The Film and Video producers and Marketers’ Association of Nigeria (FVPMAN) with the consent of the various Nollywood guilds and associations has resolved to ban the airing of movies produced under their bodies on Nigerian televisions be it cable or terrestrial.

The associations declared that from May 1, 2012, movies released through the association’s channel shall be barred from all broadcast stations and movies signed on to the stations by its producers will not be distributed through their network.

Mr. Norbert Ajaegbu, the chairman of FVPAM said this resolution is born out of the economic consequences arising from the proliferation of these films on television stations in the country.

NIIA DG, staff escape robbery attack on Lagos/Ibadan Expressway

I believe that the more officers in government (who would have looked into this persistent problem a long time ago), are attacked (not my wish though) the more ''urgent'' the need to salvage what is left of the Lagos-Ibadan Express way would be.

The Director-General of the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs, Prof. Bola Akinterinwa, and some officials of the institute escaped being robbed in Ogun State while returning to Lagos from Ibadan on Thursday evening.

Akinterinwa had left Ibadan in company with other NIIA members of staff after a two-day conference before their convoy was accosted by bandits on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

The incident occurred less than four days after the acting Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar, directed the police to commence patrol of all federal highways across the country.

An employee of NIIA, who spoke with our correspondent on the condition of anonymity, said the robbers operated between the Iperu and Sagamu end of the expressway.

He said, “We left Ibadan around 5 pm and were on our way back to Lagos. Since we were in three separate vehicles, we formed a convoy.

ACN faults PDP over allegation on Tinubu’s birthday

The Action Congress of Nigeria in Oyo State has accused the Peoples Democratic Party officials in the state and the South-West of engaging in what it called “hyperactive falsehood.”

The ruling ACN in the state accused the PDP of embarking on what it called “a baffling journey of self-mockery.”

The ACN, through its Publicity Secretary, Mr. Dauda Kolawole, made these remarks in a statement made available to journalists on Friday.

The party was reacting to an allegation from the PDP that the ACN-led government in the South-West collectively contributed the sum of N2bn of public funds to the 60th birthday celebration of its national leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.

The statement read in part, “It is apparent that just coming from the conclave where its officers were recently anointed, the PDP officials are psychologically harried to begin to justify the high level of pre-bends expended on them.”

Jonathan’s power sector reform hijacked

President Goodluck Jonathan and Vice President Namadi Sambo, should please take note.

The plan of President Goodluck Jonathan to ensure stable electricity supply to Nigerians may have been hijacked by opposing interest groups in the power sector.

Investigations by our correspondents have shown that the crisis between workers in the sector and the Minister of Power, Prof. Bath Nnaji, is delaying the power sector reform.

Other problems, which have remained intractable, include inadequate supply of gas and water, as well as the slow pace of the privatisation of the sector.

It was learnt that there are other entrenched interests militating against Jonathan’s objective of giving uninterrupted power supply to Nigerians.

The minister, it was learnt, is dealing directly with the President on the issue of privatisation of the PHCN and not through Vice-President Namadi Sambo, who is the chairman of the National Council of Privatisation.

The ministry source said that the VP was not comfortable with the situation.

Easter: Soldiers guard churches, mosques in Kano, Kaduna

Armed soldiers and other security operatives are guarding churches and mosques in major Northern Nigerian towns to forestall Boko Haram attacks during the Easter celebrations.

In an operation being coordinated by the Joint Task Force, the well-armed soldiers responded to the security alert that the Islamic insurgents might disrupt the Easter period by bombing religious places of worship by patrolling the streets of cities like Kano and Kaduna.

On Thursday evening, a SATURDAY PUNCH correspondent, who drove round major roads in the Kano metropolis, observed that some major Islamic places of worship like the Umar ibn Khattab Mosque at Zoo Road Roundabout and the one at Fagge had soldiers guarding them.

The soldiers were positioned around the mosques and would not be easily noticed.

Two brothers remanded for beating dad to death

An Ebute Meta Chief Magistrate’s Court on Thursday in Lagos remanded two brothers in Ikoyi prisons for allegedly killing their father, a sexagenarian.

The accused – Rasaq and Yusuf Abiona of ages 34 and 27 – are standing trial on two counts of conspiracy and murder, the News Agency of Nigeria reports.

The accused resided with their late father at 22, Taiwo Street, Ejigbo, a Lagos suburb.

The plea of the accused was not taken when the charges were read to them and the Magistrate, Mr. F.M. Kayode, ordered that they should be remanded in prisons, pending advice from the state Director of Public Prosecutions.

Armed robbers take over Lagos-Ibadan, Sagamu-Benin roads

It is so pathetic that for so many years, the bad state of the Lagos - Ibadan Express Way has been in a state of wear and tear, to the extent that it has now become the hide out of armed robbers... Due to its bad road condition, the express way, has claimed the lives of many Nigerian.

Nigerians are still in shock following the ordeal of 42 pupils of Holy Rosary College, Enugu, Enugu State. The pupils were attacked by armed robbers and some of them were allegedly raped after the luxury bus conveying them to Lagos broke down at Ogbere area of Ogun State about 11.30pm on Saturday.

The incident further confirmed the fear of those plying the Sagamu-Benin
Expressway that the road had become a den of armed robbers. Equally dangerous is the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. To many motorists and commuters, plying the roads is like “walking through the valley of the shadow of death.”

Although there are no available records on the numbers of robberies and cases of missing persons recorded on the roads, many of the residents of the area told PUNCH Metro that such cases are common.

EFCC To Re-Arraign Ex-Gov. Daniel 16 April

Olopade, Chief Judge of the Ogun State High Court, Abeokuta granted the request of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, to prefer information against the former governor.

The EFCC had through its counsel, Rotimi Jacobs filed “Application for Leave to prefer an information under section 340(2) (b) of the criminal procedure laws of Ogun State 2006, charge No. EFCC/01/2012 Federal Republic of Nigeria vs. Otunba Justus Olugbenga Daniel”.

The notice which was dated 30 March 2012 and signed by the Chief Judge gave the Federal Government the go ahead to arraign the former governor.

Easter: US, UK warn of bombings by Boko Haram.

INDICATIONS emerged on Thursday that this year’s Easter might be far from celebration as usual.

Phobic of the violent occurrences that characterised last Christmas, foreign governments and security agencies have sent out warnings asking the people to beware of possible attacks by the terrorist Islamic sect, Boko Haram.

The United States on Thursday issued an alert and warned their residents living or visiting Nigeria to be cautious and expect bombings by Boko Haram. The United Kingdom also released a travel advisory, warning its citizens to keep off Borno, Niger, Kaduna, Kano, Sokoto and Yobe states.

Boko Haram had bombed the Saint Theresa’s Catholic Church, Madalla, in Niger State, on December 25, last year, just as bombs had exploded twice during worship in Jos, Plateau State, last month.

But the Presidency in a statement said there was no cause for alarm and that the country was safe.

The robbery was allegedly masterminded by a chieftain of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, NURTW, at Boundary area of Ajegunle, Lagos, who had been on the run since the foiled robbery attack.

Police authorities have arrested the Delta State Head of the anti-kidnapping squad, Mr Dickson Adeyemi, a Deputy Superintendent of Police.

Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan said Adeyemi was apprehended for alleged complicity in the increasing kidnap cases in the state.

Our correspondent learnt that the officer had been flown to the Force Headquarters in Abuja for interrogation.

The squad is a special outfit set up by the security agencies with the support of the state government to tackle the abductions in the oil-rich state.

Uduaghan alleged in Warri on Wednesday that Adeyemi had been fingered as one of the backers of some of the kidnap cases in the state.

Luxury bus robbery: PTA to sue transport company, denies rape

Delays in getting an alternative vehicle when the first one broke down at that time of the night, is enough show of negligence to ensure that the students were protected from danger and assured of possible safety.

The Lagos branch of the Parents Teachers Association of Holy Rosary College, Enugu, has threatened to sue Ekene Dili Chukwu Transport Company for negligence.

This decision was taken following the robbery of 42 pupils of the school at Oke-Odo in Ogun State on Saturday when the company’s bus conveying them to Lagos broke down.

About 37 parents met at St. Agnes Catholic Church, Maryland, Lagos, on Wednesday to decide on the course of action. Twenty of the pupils were also in attendance.

The PTA Chairman, Mr. Cyril Akunyili, told PUNCH Metro that the association would take the matter to court.

Nigerian Army on Wednesday issued a warning of a possible terrorist attack in Kano during the Easter.

The warning by the General Officer Commanding 1 Mechanized Division, Kaduna, Maj.-Gen. Garba Wahab, came after the Joint Military Taskforce killed three suspected members of Boko Haram in a gunfight in Kano on Tuesday.

Wahab, who was on a familiarisation tour to his command, said at the Bukavu Barracks, Kano on Wednesday that intelligence reports had indicated a possible by suspected Boko Haram members during the Christian festivities, from Friday to Monday.

Book Haram claimed responsibility for the January 20 coordinated bombings which left 185 people dead in Kano.

Woman Jailed For Slashing Son With Blade

Do you think there is a reason cogent or justifiable enough for a mother to inflict serious/deadly injuries on her son? This is totally in sane and I feel the 6 months sentence, is not proportionate to the gravity of the crime committed.

A 30-year old mother, Mrs Grace Jacob, has been sentenced to six months in prison without an option of fine by the Family Court in Ikeja Magisterial District, Lagos, Southwest Nigeria, for using razor blade to inflict severe injuries on her son’s body.

The presiding Magistrate, Mrs. A. A. Oshoniyi, who delivered judgement on the case, on Tuesday, found the defendant guilty of gross child abuse and sentenced her accordingly.

P.M.NEWS had exclusively reported last year that Mrs Jacob inflicted injuries on her 10-year old son (name withheld), whom she gave birth to through her former lover.

“I inflicted that mark (injury) on him because I was angry with him and I beat him with a cane. His father stays in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State. The reason why I beat him like that is that since he came to my house, he started spoiling things,” the defendant had told police in a statement last year.

13 Pupils Seriously Injured As Fire Engulfs Bus

My heart goes out to the deceased's family and everyone that lost their lives. No fewer than 13 school children suffered severe burns in the early hours of Wednesday when their school bus suddenly caught fire in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.

The children, aged between five and 11 years, were pupils of Divine Wisdom Group of Schools located at Amosun, Lagelu Local Government Area of Oyo State.

The driver of the bus, Mr. Serif Oyedele, told newsmen that he was conveying the children to school when the vehicle suddenly stopped working at Iyana-Church area.

Oyedele said he pleaded with the older pupils to assist in pushing the bus, having discovered that it had flat battery.

Nigeria Police Academy, Wudil, Kano State, has been upgraded to a degree awarding institution.

This followed an approval given to the institution by the National Universities Commission on Tuesday.

Although the institution is meant to serve as a training ground for police cadets, its degree awarding status brings the total number of Nigerian universities to 124.

Executive Secretary of the NUC, Prof. Julius Okojie, who conveyed NUC’s approval to the institution, urged the police authorities to ensure that standards were maintained.

He stressed the need for adequate courses to be run due to its specialised capacity.

Okojie said courses offered by the institution must be for capacity building.

74-year-old ex-soldier secures admission to OAU

I had a colleague way back in the University, who was the oldest student in the entire school (early 70s I think) ...In spite of his old age, he managed with so much enthusiasm to attend Law School! I don't know where he is now, but he was a source of inspiration to many young ones...

A 74-year-old retired colonel Layiwola Adegunju, has secured admission to the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State, to study Law.

He was among the 5,000 new students that got admission to the university, out of the 72,500 candidates that applied for admission to OAU.

This was contained in a statement on Tuesday by the Public Relations Officer of the institution, Mr. Abiodun Olarewaju, after the 50th matriculation of the institution.

According to the statement, the septuagenarian, who is from Erunmu, Ibadan, Oyo State, was the cynosure of all eyes at the ceremony attended by the institution’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Bamitale Omole, all the principal officers of OAU, the new students and their parents and relations.

Man With Human Parts Arrested by NSCDC

Men and officers of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Kwara state command have arrested a man with human parts in Omu Aran, the headquarters of Irepodun Local Government Area of the state.

The suspect and some suspected human parts.

Parading the suspect in Ilorin , the state commandant NSCDC, Al-Hassan Audu Akor, said the suspect, Ibrahim Abubakar, was arrested with some human parts, part of which was that of a kidnapped okada rider, John Olalekan.

The civil defence boss, who said the corps acted on the report of the missing okada rider in Omu Aran, added that intelligence and surveillance work led to the arrest of Abubakar.

He said Abubakar, who claimed to be a herbalist and cattle rearer, is a Fulani of Yoruba stock from Ilorin, but lived in Omu Aran, adding that the victim hailed from Otun Ekiti, Ekiti State, not far from Omu Aran.

The NSCDC commandant said that a search party was constituted after the report of the missing okada man on 26 March 26, adding that the corpse of the okada man was found in a bush behind Government College, Omu Aran on 28 March, with head, hand and private parts already dismembered from the body.

I actually find this story very interesting...Is anyone putting into consideration the high rate of criminal acts (Theft, Kidnap, Rape etc) that are being perpetuated by most of these so called Okada riders?

Has anyone stopped to think of the daily deaths that occur on our roads (especially in the Ikeja axis) as a result of their reckless driving?

Maybe the Lagos State Government should enquire from other States on how they tackled and completely banned the use of Commercial Motor cycles in their respective states. A common and functional case in point is the State of Akwa Ibom...

Lagos State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Ade Ipaye, has said the state government has neither banned nor restricted the movement of commercial motorcyclists in the state.

Ipaye said this at a Federal High Court, Ikeja, on Monday in his reply to a suit filed by four motorcycle operators’ associations.
