Confusion hit hundreds of intending passengers at the international wing of the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos, on Thursday after a mid-day fire erupted at a section of the building.

The inferno, which caused a thick cloud of smoke to invade the terminal building, forced air travellers and airport officials to scamper to safety around the 33-year-old airport.

Investigation revealed that the fire started from a piece of electric equipment at a section of the airport under reconstruction.

When our correspondent visited the scene, pallets of foam worth millions of Naira were seen to have been consumed by the fire.

It was learnt that the fire would have burnt a major part of the main terminal building if not for the prompt response of firefighters.

However, part of the airport’s air conditioning system panel and steel pillars at the construction site were badly affected by the inferno.

Eyewitnesses said electricity was switched off during the fire incident and the six-storey terminal building evacuated.

“People ran helter-skelter because of smoke in the building,” an airline worker said.

Two persons were feared dead while five others were injured in the robbery attacks on the Ikirun branches of two banks, on Wednesday.

It was gathered that the armed robbers that numbered about six, gained entry into the bank at about 4pm, catching the customers and workers unaware.

An eyewitness, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said, “The robbers shot into the air as they stormed the bank, scaring away customers using the ATM located outside the banking hall.

“Upon gaining entry, they threatened to kill anyone who tried to play smart, warning the bankers to cooperate fully with them.”

The Osogbo-Ikirun road was deserted by motorists, who abandoned the road for the fear of running into the robbers.

This caused gridlock in adjoining roads in Ikirun, even as traders locked up their shops and closed for the day.

When our correspondent called the telephone number of Police Public Relations Officer, Osun Command, Mrs Sade Odoro, a male voice that picked her call said she had gone to the “control room.”

The Ogun State Government has suspended the Principal, Ajuwon Senior High School, Ajuwon, Ifo Local Government Area, Ogun State, Olufunke Oladeojobi, for allegedly conducting virginity test on her pupils.

Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Mr. Segun Odubela, told our correspondent on the phone on Wednesday that Oladeojobi had been suspended.

Odubela said, “A five-man committee comprising officials of the Ministry of Education and the state Teaching Service Commission has been set up to investigate Oladeojobi.

“The committee has been mandated to report back to the government in 14 days. Right now, all I can tell you is that we have suspended her pending the conclusion of investigation.”

PUNCH Metro learnt that the government’s resolution came after Odubela and senior officials of the ministry quizzed the principal for over two hours on Wednesday.

A source told our correspondent that she was summoned to the ministry after the publication of the story byThe PUNCH.

Our source said, “We were embarrassed when we read the story in The PUNCH on Wednesday. Immediately, relevant parastatals were asked to contact her and ensure that she appeared at the ministry.

Bayelsa crash: Pilot’s family accuses FG of partiality...

The family of Lt. Adeyemi Sowole, the co-pilot of the Navy helicopter which crashed on Saturday in Bayelsa State have expressed disappointment that authorities have only reckoned with the dignitaries that died on the flight.

The co-pilot’s elder brother, Taiwo, said the government had not treated other victims as important as the two dignitaries – Gen. Andrew Azazi and Governor Patrick Yakowa – on board.

Taiwo, spoke with our correspondent on Tuesday, at the family’s 28, Akintoye Street, Iyana Ipaja, Lagos home.

The ambience was sombre, as relations and friends sat around Adeyemi’s father, Solomon, in the family’s sitting room. Words were few. But some of the sympathisers intermittently offered prayers to break the silence.

The deceased’s brother said, “All lives are equal. At this point, the right thing to do is for government to treat all the victims with respect and give them the same recognition.

“But it seems as if only the dignitaries on board the helicopter died. Adeyemi is also important.

“Adeyemi and a senior colleague lost their lives also. They are equally precious to their families. It was their responsibility to transport the dignitaries even though their own lives were on the line.”

Another family member, an aunt of the deceased, broke down in tears. She expressed sadness that while the news about the crash was circulating, authorities only focused on Yakowa and Azazi.

“It’s like the people in government see our son and his colleague as unimportant. Is it only Azazi and Yakowa that died in that crash? Why can’t they sympathise with us as well? The incident happened and all they were talking about were the two government officials on board,” the aunt, who declined to give her name, stated.

The Duchess of Cambridge stepped out Sunday, Dec. 16 for her first event since announcing she's pregnant on Dec. 6. Middleton, 30, attended BBC's Sports Personality of the Year Awards in London wearing dark green Alexander McQueen dress. 

The Duchess looked stunning in the long gown with bell-sleeves and a deep v-neck, but it's still too early to see a baby bump.

Prince William's wife has been resting at home this past week after being hospitalized for three nights on Dec. 3 for acute morning sickness. 

"A decision wasn't made until the very last minute due to Catherine's health," a source told Us Weekly of Middleton making an appearance at the awards. "She doesn't feel well enough to carry out a lengthy engagement but was determined to pay tribute to [Team GB sportsmen and women]."

Middleton presented the Lifetime Achievement awards with David Beckham to Lord Seb Coe, Jessica Ennis and Bradley Wiggins. She didn't formally speak, but shared a few words with the honorees.

Sadly, Middleton had to attend the event without her husband by her side as he is in Anglesey working a shift for the RAF search and rescue team.

Bieber said in his book, “I have not joined the Illuminati or any other cult. I’m a Christian, and I pray before every show and am thankful for every blessing…”

If he has lied about that, what else has he lied about? Perhaps about Mariah Yeater – the girl who made allegations against him about fathering her baby?

This year, he took a court-ordered DNA paternity test, but if he is not the dad, why did he not tell the press? He kept publicly professing before the DNA test that he did not get Yeater pregnant.

Maybe the reason is that he was lying, and he is the father.

Veteran Nollywood actress, Ngozi Nwosu, who has been down with kidney related disease, was seen at the recording of the popular TV game show 'Who Wants to be a Millionaire' over the weekend. The 'Fuji House of Commotion' comedy show star was in a shadow of herself. 

She was a guest player of the game show recorded on Saturday, December 15, 2012 in Lagos. She was on the show for a special edition to raise money for her treatment by playing the game to win on the TV game show with the help of two other guest players invited for the purpose. 

At the end of the show, she went home with N1m as the prize money won on the show. There have been calls by many for the proper medical treatment of the actress after she was believed to have been neglected by her colleagues in the movie industry.

The kidnappers of Nollywood actress, Nkiru Sylvanus have reportedly demanded for a ransom of N100m for her release. This was made known shortly after news went round about her kidnap.

Nkiru was reportedly picked by the unidentified men at her house in Owerri, Imo State after she was said to have left a movie set in the Imo State capital on Saturday night. 

Her kidnap is coming shortly after the release of Professor Kamene Okonjo, who is the mother of Nigeria's Finance Minister, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala. Nkiru is a Special Assistant to Rochas Okorocha, the governor of Imo State.

An actor accused of raping a teenage girl yesterday blamed it on ‘sexsomnia’, a condition which he claims causes him to have sex in his sleep.

Simon Morris, who appeared in a film with Michael Caine and in the TV soap Hollyoaks, is alleged to have attacked the 15-year-old after she drank cocktails at a birthday party.

But the 42-year-old told a jury he had no recollection of the alleged rape because he was sleepwalking at the time.

When arrested he initially refused to believe that he had sex with the girl until police presented him with DNA evidence, Cardiff Crown Court heard. 

He told jurors: ‘I have a history of sleepwalking, checking my phone, gyrating against door frames and having sex with partners in my sleep. It’s quite embarrassing but I once engaged in sexual activity with a recent ex-girlfriend.

‘I climbed on top of her in the middle of the night in a blank state. I have also had partial sex with my current partner and gyrated against her leg.’

Widow of the late Kaduna State Governor Patrick Yakowa, Amina, said in Kaduna on Sunday that her worst regret was not praying with her husband before he embarked on his last journey to Bayelsa State on Saturday.

Amid sobs, Amina narrated how her husband left the house on Saturday without the usual ‘prayer of agreement’ and how they had planned to meet in Abuja for a thanksgiving service for President Goodluck Jonathan’s wife, Patience.

She told the congregation at a church service organised for the late governor inside the Sir Kashim Ibrahim Government House that, “Everyday, we normally hold our hands to pray before he steps out of the house to the office. But on Saturday, when he told me he was leaving for Bayelsa State. I just bid him farewell and we said we would meet in Abuja for the thanksgiving ceremony of President Goodluck Jonathan’s wife, Patience. I regret that we could not pray as usual. After that he came down and left for Bayelsa.

“We used to wake up every morning to pray. Before yesterday (Saturday), he used to insist that we pray before he would step out of the house for any engagement. On December 23, we would have celebrated our 34th year of marriage but for death.”

She said she could not pray for her husband on Saturday because she was down with catarrh.

“We planned to meet in Abuja today for the thanksgiving service of the President’s wife. He (Yakowa) had been a pillar of support to our family,” she added.

Yakowa; ex-National Security Adviser, Gen. Andrew Azazi , and four others died when a Naval Augusta 109 Helicopter in which they were travelling crashed in the Nembe-Okoroba in Bayelsa State.

They were returning from the burial of Pa Douglas, the father of an aide to Jonathan, Oronto Douglas. 

Villagers recount last moment of crashed helicopter

Naval pilots – Commander Murtala Daba and Lt. Adeyemi Sowole – tried in vain to land the helicopter which crashed on Saturday at Okoroba community in Nembe Local Government Area, Bayelsa State.

Governor of Kaduna State, Mr. Patrick Yakowa; the former National Security Adviser, Gen. Owoye Azazi, and two of their aides died alongside the two pilots.

Eyewitnesses said the pilots appeared to have sighted a space at the swampy mangrove, few metres to the crash site, and made some efforts to land the ill-fated helicopter.

In an unclear circumstance, the helicopter was said to have attempted going up again but in the process, its blades hit one of the palm trees surrounding the area and it came crashing.

It was learnt that Yakowa’s mobile telephone was intact as it kept ringing after the crash.

“When we brought the body out, we started hearing sounds of phone ringing from the left side of his pocket.

We later discovered that calls were coming to the telephone and it could be from concerned persons but no one answered,” a security source, who pleaded anonymity, said.

When The PUNCH visited the site, wrecked and burnt parts of the chopper were found littering the area.

The swampy mangrove filled with tall trees and vegetation is located few kilometers to the Okoroba community, off the Ogbia Nembe waterways.
