A violent criminal accused of having regular sex with a 14-year-old abused her daily because social services claimed to have 'no power' to stop him, it emerged today.

On one occasion the alleged victim, 'Jessica', who fell pregnant twice, ran away and was found half naked under married father-of-two Arshid Hussain's bed but police arrested her and let him go, secret documents have revealed.

Hussain, then 24, had convictions for robbery and affray, and was about to be jailed for violent disorder.

But Rotherham social services allegedly told Jessica's mother they couldn't stop the relationship because she 'went willingly'.
The Times revealed today that Hussain has never been prosecuted for suspected child sex offences, but is now being investigated 14 years on.

At the time he was on a social services list of men believed to be grooming up to 40 young girls and more than a dozen believed he was their 'boyfriend'.
Speaking about when she was caught in bed with him by police, Jessica, which is not her real name, told The Times: 'I was in bed upstairs with Ash when the police came into the house. He panicked and pulled on some trousers.

'I grabbed a pair of knickers and tried to hide under the bed. One of the police officers told me to come out. He could see my legs sticking out.';

Officers then found an offensive weapon and she was arrested, but despite noting later she was 'at risk of sexual abuse' Hussain was released.

The case in Rotherham, South Yorkshire, which has become known as Britain's under-age sex capital, is another example of where the authorities have let down a vulnerable children.

'Just like crowns, dentures and bridges, if something is well-made by a professional dentist and it’s properly fitted it shouldn’t cause problems.

'However, ill-fitting grills can cause tooth decay, infection and even movement of the teeth, which could lead to needing braces to realign the teeth.

A judge told a Muslim woman she must remove her burkha in court before she can enter a plea after she refused to reveal her face.

Judge Peter Murphy said the principle of open justice overrode the 21-year-old woman's religious beliefs, and warned there was a risk a different person could go into the dock pretending to be her.

The woman, from Hackney, east London, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, appeared before Blackfriars Crown Court today charged with intimidating a witness.

She said she cannot remove the veil in front of men because of her religious beliefs.
Judge Murphy told her: ‘It is necessary for this court to be satisfied that they can recognize the defendant.

‘While I obviously respect the right to dress in any way she wishes, certainly while outside the court, the interests of justice are paramount.

‘I can’t, as a circuit judge, accept a plea from a person whose identity I am unable to ascertain.’

He added: ‘It would be easy for someone on a later occasion to appear and claim to be the defendant.

‘The court would have no way to check on that.’
Her barrister, Claire Burtwistle, told the court the woman was not prepared to lower her veil at all while men were in the room.

‘In front of women, it is not an issue’, she said. ‘It is simply men that she will not allow to see her face.

Ms Burtwistle suggested herself, a female police officer or a female prison guard could identify the defendant and confirm to the court that it is the same person as in the police arrest photos.

Prosecutor Sarah Counsell added that the police officer in charge of the case was content that he recognised the defendant while she was in the burkha...

 

But Judge Murphy rejected the suggestions, saying: ‘It seems to me to be quite fundamental that the court is sure who it is the court is dealing with.

‘Furthermore, this court, as long as I am sitting, has the highest respect for any religious tradition a person has.

‘In my courtroom also, this sometimes conflicts with the interests of a paramount need for the administration of justice. In my courtroom, that’s going to come first.’
The judge added: ‘There is the principle of open justice and it can’t be subject to the religion of the defendant whether the principle is observed or not.

‘I am not saying this because of the particular form of dress by this defendant, I apply that to any form of dress that had the same issues.’

Judge Murphy adjourned the case for legal argument over whether the defendant should have to remove her veil.

It will be heard again on September 12, when the defendant is expected to enter a not guilty plea and go to trial.

The defendant is alleged to have intimidated a witness, in Finsbury Park, north London, in June.

Variant CJD is an incurable disease believed to be caused by exposure to bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) which affects cattle.The vast majority of cases are caused by consuming beef contaminated with BSE...

Mr Kara, said: 'I had trouble for quite a long time, going back four years. My doctors didn’t take it seriously, my headaches and coordination being off balance.They just put it down to stress.'

It was not until Mr Kara, who has been a vegetarian for the past five years, moved to Brighton two years ago that a doctor referred him to the specialist CJD National Prion Clinic in London where he was diagnosed with variant CJD.

'My memory’s bad and so is my coordination and sometimes I can’t see,' he explained.
'I get hallucinations sometimes, which is part the disease and part the medication.

Lagos State Government has rescued 25 children from an alleged child trafficker in the Egbeda area of the state.

It was learnt that the suspected trafficker, Mrs. Rosemary Nwachukwu, was also arrested and had been handed over to the Alausa Police Division, while the children were currently in government’s custody.
The government accused Nwachukwu of operating an illegal orphanage named, Saint Stephen Charity Foundation, on Abiodun Adebanbo Street, Egbeda.

It was gathered that officials from the Office of Youth and Social Department, led by the Director, Child Development, Mrs. Alaba Fadairo, in conjunction with personnel from the Office of Public Defender and policemen, stormed the orphanage on Saturday.

The government said findings showed that the suspect was using the orphanage as a front for another illegal business.
The Director, OPD, Mrs. Omotola Rotimi, said of the children, whose ages ranged from three months to 12 years, were victims of human trafficking.

Rotimi said, “It was discovered upon investigation that Nwachukwu trafficked 27 children and kept them in a room. We were able to rescue three infants of ages three to six months and 22 other children. Efforts are still on to locate the remaining two.”
The OPD director added that the suspect used the victims for financial gains by putting them up for adoption. She said the suspect would be charged to court after investigations had been concluded.

However, Fadairo, said, “Investigation also shows that there are no records of each child and no evidence of how the children got to her orphanage. No police or security report.”
Fadairo urged members of the public to be vigilant and report suspicious orphanages to the appropriate authorities. She said some of the orphanages might be fronts for human trafficking.

But Miller didn't appear to be too concerned about his fuller figure as he laughed and joked with his friend, all too aware that the cameras were on him.

The actor, who was brought up in the States but was born in Chipping Norton in Oxfordshire and retains duel citizenship, was dressed casually in a baggy red T-shirt, tracksuit bottoms and trainers.

Miller shot to fame in Prison Break which told the story of two brothers - Lincoln Burrows, played by Dominic Purcell, who was sentenced to death for a crime he didn't commit and Miller's Michael Scofield, who gets himself jailed to save his sibling.

Scofield creates a tattoo - which took five hours to apply each time onto Miller's body - which also had hidden within it, the blueprint of the prison.

At the height of his Prison Break fame, he starred in two Mariah Carey videos for her songs It's Like That and We Belong Together, singles from her 2005 album The Emancipation of Mimi.

Great escape: Miller's character Michael Scoefiled had a blue print of the prison inked on his body...

But since Prison Break, which ran from 2005 to 2009, Miller has kept a fairly low profile, and has only had a few minor roles.

He appeared in an episode of the hit series Law and Order: Special Victims Unit last year and stars alongside Milla Jovovich and Ali Larter in the upcoming 3D horror film Resident Evil: Afterlife, due out this September.

Last month, he landed a role in upcoming thriller The Mourning Portrait, which is inspired by post-mortem photography that was popular at the end of the 19th century when many people would photograph their recently deceased as a keepsake.

Television star Wentworth Miller announced he was gay on Wednesday in order to take a public stand against homophobia in Russia.

The Prison Break star declined an invitation to a Russian film festival after the country passed a series of anti-gay laws.

The 41-year-old Prison Break star had been asked to attend the St. Petersburg International Film Festival.

'As a gay man, I must decline,' he wrote in his reply, which was made public by the campaigning group GLAAD.

'I am deeply troubled by the current attitude toward and treatment of gay men and women by the Russian government,' Wentworth added in his letter.

'The situation is in no way acceptable, and I cannot in good conscience participate in a celebratory occasion hosted by a country where people like myself are being systematically denied their basic right to live and love openly,' he said. 

Wentworth said if circumstances improved he would be free to make a different choice - adding that he had 'a degree of Russian ancestry' and had enjoyed past visits to the country previously.

The Russian laws have sparked protests in the US where some gay rights advocates have poured Russian vodka in the streets.

The laws also have caused some concern among athletes who will be heading to Russia for the 2014 Olympic Winter Games.

The two British women accused of acting as drug mules in return for a holiday in Peru have been moved to a notoriously tough jail to await trial.

Melissa Reid, from Glasgow, and Michaella McCollum Connolly, from Northern Ireland, face spending up to three years in Lima’s Virgen de Fatima prison after bail was refused.

Flanked by ten armed guards, the 20-year-olds looked exhausted and overwhelmed as they were led in handcuffs from a court jail to the overcrowded women’s prison, where poorer inmates are reportedly forced to prostitute themselves in return for food.

Prosecutor Juan Rojas had told the judge during their court appearance that the pair ‘knowingly and voluntarily’ agreed to act as drug mules after accepting an all-expenses- paid holiday to Peru from three strangers.

On July 20, a British man called Jake introduced Melissa and Michaella to three men, Julio, Christian and Enrique, while they were in Ibiza, Mr Rojas said.
The three paid for air fares to Peru, hotels and tours, and gave them cash. The women flew separately to Lima.
