'You not talkin' to me?' Robert De Niro slams 'rude' Jay-Z for not returning his calls at Leo DiCaprio's party...

He's got 99 problems and Robert is one: Jay-Z allegedly got a tongue lashing from Robert DeNiro at Leonardo DiCaprio's birthday party in New York.

Hello Friends!

His most quoted movie line is the famously threatening 'you talkin' to me' from Taxi Driver.

But Robert DeNiro was fuming over quite the opposite when he started an argument with Jay-Z at Leonardo DiCaprio's birthday party in New York.

The legendary actor allegedly scolded the rapper for failing to return not just one, but SIX of his phone calls. The 69-year-old was sitting at a table at the upscale bash when the musician came over to say hello, but the Raging Bull star was in no mood to be friendly.

A New York Post insider then overheard De Niro complaining the rapper, who lives near the Oscar winner in the posh TriBeCa area, agreed to record a song for the Tribeca Film Festival, but failed to follow through.
The Mission favourite rang the music mogul on several occasions to plan the project, but his calls were never so much as returned.

The insider said: 'Bob wasn’t in any mood to make polite conversation.
'He told Jay that if somebody calls you six times, you call them back.

'It doesn’t matter who you are, that is just rude.'

Raging Bull: Bob, here with wife Grace Hightower, was not in the mood to listen to Jay's silver-tongued excuses
Raging Bull: Bob, here with wife Grace Hightower, was not in the mood to listen to Jay's silver-tongued excuses.

The rapper tried make light of the situation by claiming he is terrible on the phone, but that failed to douse Robert's anger, and he continued to humiliate his foe in front of the likes of Martin Scorsese, Jamie Foxx and Cameron Diaz.

Even the feminine charms of his curvy wife Beyonce were not enough to get him off his high horse. The source said: 'De Niro kept telling him that he thinks he’s the man, but that he was disrespectful.

'Beyoncé came over, but that didn’t calm Bob down.
'It was the talk of the party. Everyone was saying there’s only one star in New York bigger and badder than Jay-Z, and that’s Robert De Niro.
'He can be quite scary when he’s angry.'

Even that didn't work: His sexy wife Beyonce tried to charm Robert but she failed to quell his rage
Even that didn't work: His sexy wife Beyonce tried to charm Robert but she failed to quell his rage.

The latter is certainly an understatement, given his fame for playing characters with explosive tempers in the likes of Goodfellas and Raging Bull.
However a source close to Bobby tried to play down the seriousness of the incident.

The insider said: 'It was a low-key private conversation between two people that was apparently overheard. It was not a heated discussion.'

Goldie And Prezzo To Wed Secretly?

Hello Friends!

Rumours have been flying around and we can’t help but assume that Kenyan rapper Prezzo and Nigerian pop singer Goldie are in a relationship.

Sources are now claiming the celebrity pair are planning to tie the knot.

Nothing is confirmed yet, but we have information they may have already picked a date : Saturday, February 9, 2013.

Those who claim to be insiders allege Prezzo has visited Goldie’s parent’s residence in Lagos to ask for their daughter’s hand in marriage. We could however, not immediately confirm this. And Goldie, who’s planning to release an ‘Africa Invasion’ album, insists she will no longer be commenting on her relationship with the Kenyan.

Photo of Prezzo

Goldie and Prez were last spotted last week at the Channel O ‘Hollywood Style House Party’ held in Lekki, Lagos. Before then, they attended late Pastor Bimbo Odukoya’s daugther Tolu’s wedding on November 3 dressed in matching blue traditional wear.

The couple have however remained mum about their steaming affair; and seem determined to leave it that way for now.

Goldie and Prezzo met up for the first time during the Big Brother Stargame this year and even though they ended their relationship on a sour note, they eventually linked up when Prezzo came begging.

$11bn cash taken abroad through Nigerian airports — Sanusi

CBN Governor, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi
CBN Governor, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi.

Hello Friends!

The Governor, Central Bank of Nigeria, Mr. Lamido Sanusi, has said that about $11bn (N1.73tn) has been taken out of the country through the airports this year, a development he describes as worrisome.

Sanusi, while speaking at an event organised by Bank Directors Association of Nigeria in Lagos on Thursday, wondered why many Nigerians now preferred carrying out transactions with the United States dollar at the expense of the local currency, the naira.

According to him, the dollar is becoming the country’s second currency based on its usage, adding that the central bank’s aim for contemplating the introduction of the N5,000 bill was to address the development. He said, “In this country, almost everybody uses the dollar. This year alone, the records we have based on the declared amount at the airports is getting to about $11bn in cash that was taken out of Nigeria.

“Why would anyone walk out of an airport with $5m? Well, they will say is because the law has made it clear that you can take any amount so long as you have declared it and I cannot stop you. These are some of the issues we wanted the introduction of the N5,000 note to address.”

Sanusi said the planned introduction of the N5,000 bills was part of a thought process aimed also at driving the cash-less policy initiative.

Super Eagles Coach, Stephen Keshi

Hello Friends!

Excited residents of Miami, say they want the Super Eagles back in the city following their exciting display against Venezuela in the friendly game on Wednesday.

Marcos Bandwitch, a Venezuelan fan, said, “We want you to come back and play here and make us love football more because baseball is our game here but you have made us like football very well now.”

A Brazilian, Gi Carlos, who was attached to the Nigerian team, said after he got a green and white shirt from one of the players, that he could not wait to see Nigeria play again in Miami.
“You guys were simply fantastic and we want you back against any team here at Marlins Park,” Carlos said.

Meanwhile, Nigerian Consul General in the United States, Ambassador Jeffrey Temilabe, was overjoyed by the Eagles 3-1 victory over Venezuela.

Addressing the team after the match in the company with Nigeria’s ambassador to Argentina, Ambassador Chive Ignatius Kaave, Temilabe said the Eagles are bringing back memories of when the team were the dominant force in African football by winning the Nations Cup in 1994 and the football gold at the Atlanta’96 Olympic Games.

Total fuel subsidy removal is a must – Jonathan...

President Goodluck Jonathan

Hello Friends!

President Goodluck Jonathan on Thursday launched a fresh campaign to totally remove the subsidy on fuel, barely a year after a similar campaign and forceful removal of subsidy almost brought the country to a standstill.

Jonathan said only the total removal of subsidy on petroleum products would attract investors to the oil sector and put an end to the importation of petroleum products as it is currently being done.

About this time last year, the President, in his budget estimates submitted to the Senate, proposed total removal of subsidy on petroleum products and in spite of public protests removed subsidy on January 1, 2012.

The President’s action was greeted by spontaneous protests among the citizens.

A mass action coordinated by civil society groups paralysed activities in the country for about two weeks until the government backpedalled and announced a partial removal. Per litre pump price of petrol was consequently reduced to N97 from the initial N141 under the zero-subsidy regime.

The pump price of the product pre-January 1, 2012 was N65.

Jonathan started the fresh campaign to totally remove subsidy while receiving the report of the graduating participants of the Senior Executive Course 34, 2012, of the National Institute of Policy and Strategic Studies, Kuru, near Jos, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

“Why is it that people are not building refineries in Nigeria despite that it is a big business? It is because of the policy of subsidy, and that is why we want to get out of it,” the President said.

Doctors leave bullet in banker’s body, extract four

Badejo

Hello Friends!

An employee of Access Bank, Femi Badejo, who was allegedly shot alongside a security guard, Joshua Musa, by policemen on Saturday at Ikota, Lagos, still has a bullet lodged in his wrist.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the bullet could not be removed at the moment.

“I’m still in pain from the bullet wounds. I was shot five times. Four of the bullets have been removed but the fifth one is still lodged in my wrist and because of fear of complications, doctors can’t touch it for now,” he said.
However, Badejo has been moved from St. Nicholas Hospital, Lagos Island, to an undisclosed location.

Meanwhile, Covenant University Alumni Association has written a petition to the Inspector-General of Police, Muhammed Abubakar, over the alleged shooting.
Badejo is an alumnus of the university and member of the association.
The Vice-President of the Abuja chapter of the association, Mr. Reginald Bassey, berated the police for lack of professionalism and failing to issue a public apology.

Bassey said the matter was more pathetic because Badejo is a promising young man, a husband and a father-to-be, who had been left incapacitated for days.

Jose Mujica: The world’s ‘poorest’ president • Donates 90% salary to poor • Shuns presidential mansion • Rides 1987 Volkswagen...

President Jose Mujica
President Jose Mujica...

Hello Friends!

It’s a common grumble that politicians’ lifestyles are far removed from those of their electorate. Not so in Uruguay. Meet the president – who lives on a ramshackle farm and gives away most of his pay.

Laundry is strung outside the house. The water comes from a well in a yard, overgrown with weeds. Only two police officers and Manuela, a three-legged dog, keep watch outside.

This is the residence of the president of Uruguay, Jose Mujica, whose lifestyle clearly differs sharply from that of most other world leaders.
President Mujica has shunned the luxurious house that the Uruguayan state provides for its leaders and opted to stay at his wife’s farmhouse, off a dirt road outside the capital, Montevideo.

The president and his wife work the land themselves, growing flowers.

This austere lifestyle – and the fact that Mujica donates about 90% of his monthly salary, equivalent to $12,000 (£7,500), to charity – has led him to be labelled the poorest president in the world.“I may appear to be an eccentric old man … But this is a free choice.”

Is Bruce Jenner set to divorce Kris? Keeping Up With The Kardashians star 'seeks advice from lawyer over 21-year marriage'...

Heading for a split? Bruce Jenner has talked to a divorce lawyer about his marriage to Kris, it has been claimed
Heading for a split? Bruce Jenner has talked to a divorce lawyer about his marriage to Kris, it has been claimed...

Hello Friends!

Bruce Jenner and Kris Jenner have been hit by tabloid claims their marriage is on the rocks.
Former Olympic athlete Bruce has apparently consulted a divorce lawyer regarding his 21-year marriage to the Kardashian matriarch.

This week's edition of the National Enquirer reports Bruce has reached breaking point because of Kris allegedly flirting with younger men - and her ego over the Kardashian clan's growing business empire.
The couple - who have teen daughters Kendall and Kylie together and a $155m forture - renewed their wedding vows last year, which was aired during an episode of Keeping Up With The Kardashians.

But insiders told the National Enquirer: 'Bruce feels that Kris treats him like a doormat, and he's had enough. 'She constantly belittles his appearance and complains to mutual friends that he’s a boring old fart. 'Then she has the gall to flaunt her relationships with younger guys in his face!'

The tabloid magazine reports that Bruce, 63, has been discussing the idea of divorce with golfing friends at Lake Sherwood Country Club in Calabasas, California, where he regularly attends.

The insider added that Bruce hates the way Kris, 57, is portrayed as the money-maker - and how his Country Club pals jokingly refer to him as 'Bruce Kardashian'.
The National Enquirer claims Bruce has sought the help of an entertainment lawyer who has helped him value their assets in the event he decides to file for divorce.
'He’s also talked to a divorce attorney buddy about potential custody arrangements for his two girls with Kris,' the source added.

A spokeswoman for Bruce and Kris Jenner declined to comment when contacted by MailOnline.

Growing empire: The couple have been married for 21 years and have teen daughters Kendall, far right, and Kylie, fourth left, together. Bruce is also step father to Kourtney, Kim and Khloe Kardashian

Drinking even small amounts of alcohol while pregnant 'can affect child's IQ' ...

Even small amounts have adverse affect on kids IQ
Even small amounts have adverse affect on kids IQ...

Hello Friends!

Even small amounts of alcohol consumed during pregnancy can adversely impact the IQ of a child, new research shows.

Drinking by pregnant women has been a controversial topic, with no scientific unanimity. While some experts propagate total abstinence from alcohol, others have favoured moderate consumption

The new study, which used a genetic approach to study the impact of alcohol, has concluded that children whose mothers consumed alcohol during pregnancy had lower IQ when they were eight, compared to kids who were not exposed to any alcohol in the womb.

Researchers from the universities of Bristol and Oxford used data from over 4,000 mothers and their children to arrive at the conclusion. The study will be published in scientific journal PLOS ONE on Thursday. In order to separate the impact of alcohol from other lifestyle factors such as smoking and diet, the researchers used genetic data.

They found that four genetic variants in alcohol metabolizing genes among 4,167 children studied were strongly related to lower IQ at age eight.
There was no effect seen in children whose mothers abstained during pregnancy, Dr Ron Gray from University of Oxford who led the research said.

When a person drinks alcohol, ethanol is converted to acetaldehyde by enzymes.
Variations in the genes that 'encode' these enzymes lead to differences in the ability to metabolize ethanol. In 'slow metabolisers', peak alcohol levels may be higher and persist for longer than in fast metabolisers', scientists explained.

It is believed that the fast' metabolism protects against abnormal brain development in infants because less alcohol is delivered to the fetus.

Governors’ brutality: A failure of leadership

Sokoto State Governor, Alhaji Aliyu Wamakko
Sokoto State Governor, Alhaji Aliyu Wamakko...

Hello Friends!

THE recent reported assault against some citizens by some state governors is worrisome and unbecoming of persons holding such a high position. Governor Aliyu Wamakko of Sokoto State, according to media reports, allegedly flogged three members of staff of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria for denying his community electricity. The governor was said to have invited the Business Manager, Giwa Business Unit, Sokoto, Moses Osigwe, to his personal residence, and allegedly lashed him thoroughly with a horsewhip. He also allegedly instructed two mobile policemen to also beat the man until he became unconscious. It was an unfortunate display of Nigeria’s ‘Big Man’ mentality.

Two other PHCN employees were said to have been similarly beaten up by the policemen. The sad incident has provoked a threat of mass action by the Nigeria Labour Congress in the state. According to the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Abdulwahed Omar, “The position of congress is that the governor must apologise publicly and he must do this as quickly as possible, otherwise we will unleash a series of actions to protect the integrity of not just workers in Sokoto State, but that of the generality of Nigerian workers.” This is not the first time such acts would be reported. At different times, the Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha, and his Ekiti State counterpart, Kayode Fayemi, have been accused of manhandling some citizens. The allegations were however vigorously denied.

Corruption: North’s call for death penalty stirs controversy

Professor Itse Sagay

Hello Friends!

AREWA Consultative Forum’s demand for death penalty for corruption cases stirred a controversy on Wednesday.

While the Ndigbo youths in Ohanaeze were divided on the propriety or otherwise of the demand, the Trade Union Congress and the Congress for Progressive Change hailed the ACF demand and submitted that corruption in the country required such a drastic measure.

A lawyer to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Mr. Rotimi Jacobs (SAN), said the suggestion was in order, but an eminent constitutional lawyer, Prof. Itse Sagay (SAN); the All Nigeria Peoples Party and the Ijaw National Congress dismissed the proposal, saying it would not reduce corruption in the country.

The northern umbrella body, ACF, in its proposal on constitution review submitted to the National Assembly, had recommended capital punishment for corruption.

“One crime that has proved capable of gravely harming or killing its victim, Nigeria, is corruption. Sadly, our laws have not recognised corruption for what it is. ACF recommends that corruption be recognised as a capital offence and made to carry capital punishment,” ACF said in its proposal, a copy of which was obtained by The PUNCH on Tuesday.

Afenifere says no

The Pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, on Wednesday however disagreed with the North’s proposal and insisted that it would not solve official graft in the country.

The Secretary General of the group, Chief Seinde Arogbofa, while reacting to the issue in a telephone interview with one of our correspondents, said imposing a life jail term on corrupt individuals would suffice.

He said, “We in Afenifere do not agree with the death penalty proposal for corruption. It is not the solution to corruption except where it involves those who take life.

“As to corruption, death penalty is not realistic because where do we start from? It’s the common knowledge that most of our former leaders are corrupt. Is the law going to be retroactive?

Death is it –TUC

Supporting the ACF, the TUC president, Mr. Peter Esele, said corruption had got to a level where it should attract capital punishment.

He said, “The capital punishment is the law in China. You know something graver than that is happening here today. Or let me put it this way, there was a time in China when they had a similar threat of corruption.

“The Chinese decided to introduce capital punishment to deal with corruption-related cases. That step has streamlined their society and cleansed their community. I think our own has got to that level.

“If the introduction of capital punishment would help to reduce corruption, it is a welcome development. Anything that will reduce corruption is welcome.”

Using photo trickery, Mr Sakovitch sought to overcome stereotypes about those gripped by drug addition, showing how people from a variety of backgrounds could fall prey to substance abuse.

But he also peeled back the years to show the person before their descent into addiction, showing them in smart clothes with neat hair.

These startling photos, posed by subjects, are part of Mr Sakovitch's 'Half' project, which he created with make up 'in order to explore the outsiders superficial judgement of the same person before and after drug abuse', according to Features Shoot.

He split his subject's images in half and stitched the before and after images together, the website reported. The project was born while Mr Sakovitch was studying photography at the Arts University College at Bournemouth, where he graduated last year.

North demands death penalty for corruption...

Mr Dino Melaye
Mr Dino Melaye...

Hello Friends!

Ahead of Thursday’s zonal constitutional conferences, foremost northern political group, the Arewa Consultative Forum, has recommended capital punishment for corruption.

At present, China is the only notable country where corruption attracts capital punishment.

In its proposal submitted to the National Assembly, a copy of which was obtained by one our correspondents in Kaduna on Tuesday, the ACF rued the destructive impact of corruption on the country and said that anybody found guilty of corruption should be killed.

The forum said, “The law classifies crimes according to the severity of their consequences both on the individual victim, the community or the country. If crime holds a high potential to gravely harm or kill its victim, the more severe the punishment, which was designed to punish and deter offenders.

“This is to say that punishment must always fit offences. One crime that has proved capable of gravely harming or killing its victim, Nigeria, is corruption.

“Sadly, our laws have not recognised corruption for what it is. ACF recommends that corruption be recognised as a capital offence and made to carry capital punishment.”

Corruption is regarded as common-place among the country’s political class and men of power and efforts to stem it have been handled with kid gloves notwithstanding the establishment of anti-corruption agencies.

Only few notable Nigerians have been tried and sentenced for corruption.

Former governor of Delta State, James Ibori, is currently serving jail term in London for economic crimes.
