Do you think there is a reason cogent or justifiable enough for a mother to inflict serious/deadly injuries on her son? This is totally in sane and I feel the 6 months sentence, is not proportionate to the gravity of the crime committed.
A 30-year old mother, Mrs Grace Jacob, has been sentenced to six months in prison without an option of fine by the Family Court in Ikeja Magisterial District, Lagos, Southwest Nigeria, for using razor blade to inflict severe injuries on her son’s body.
The presiding Magistrate, Mrs. A. A. Oshoniyi, who delivered judgement on the case, on Tuesday, found the defendant guilty of gross child abuse and sentenced her accordingly.
P.M.NEWS had exclusively reported last year that Mrs Jacob inflicted injuries on her 10-year old son (name withheld), whom she gave birth to through her former lover.
“I inflicted that mark (injury) on him because I was angry with him and I beat him with a cane. His father stays in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State. The reason why I beat him like that is that since he came to my house, he started spoiling things,” the defendant had told police in a statement last year.
Oficials of the Lagos State Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, WAPA, shortly after took up the case and vowed to prosecute the woman for child abuse.
According to the presiding magistrate, the case was purely that of child abuse reported at Shasha Police Divisional Headquarters on 15 August, 2011. It was reported that at 4, Mohammed Layout, Shasha Street, Lagos, Mrs Jacob had assaulted her own son by using razor blade to inflict injuries all over him, which caused the child grievous harm.
“At the Police Station, the defendant admitted the charge levelled against her, she also made a statement,” the presiding magistrate said. The magistrate then tendered the statement made by the defendant as evidence.
Delivering her judgement, the presiding magistrate said: “in view of the plea of guilty plea taken by the defendant and the facts duly stated by the prosecution and duly admitted as true by the defendant and the exhibits admitted for identity purposes only, the defendant is hereby found guilty as charged. The defendant is hereby sentenced to six months in prison.”
