Last weekend, security agencies alerted residents of Lagos State that they are keeping a tab on illegal aliens in the state. The police specifically said they are poised to check the influx of aliens into such places as Ikoyi and Victoria Island.
The new Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, Umar Manko, said the security agencies, including the immigrations are collaborating to check the influx of foreigners into the state. These are very reassuring words coming from the state police boss at a time the nation is facing a very serious security challenge, especially in the North.
The nation’s notoriously porous borders coupled with the lax security at these border posts make it very easy for thousands of illegal aliens to invade our country, especially from the northern flanks daily. It is also easy for illegal aliens from Niger, Mali, Chad and Cameroon to enter Nigeria because they usually pose as Hausa.
In the wake of the Boko Haram terrorist attacks, the Sokoto State government recently deported thousands of such aliens without valid residency permits to their countries of origin. These aliens whose backgrounds are not officially known because of the manner they sneak into the country, constitute a serious security threat at a time like this.
The security agencies in Lagos State should not stop at keeping a tab on the illegal aliens. They should be arrested and investigated about their mission in Lagos.
Investigations have revealed that the majority of commercial motorcycle operators (okada riders) in Lagos are aliens. They too should be picked up to establish their real country of origin and whether they have valid residency permits.
And for the rich men who cannot do without hiring aliens with questionable backgrounds as their guards or house helps, they had better watch it or else they will hire someone that might end up harming them. A woman in Magodo was almost strangled by her Cameroonian guard along with his accomplices he invited to attack her recently. They carted her money and jewelry away.
These times call for utmost vigilance on the part of all residents of the state. This is because if security agencies turn the heat on those breaching the peace in the North, they may relocate down south where they feel they could have a safe haven. We must not allow that to happen.
