Experts believe British schoolchildren are among the unhappiest in the developed world due to the pressures of modern life.
Hello Friends!
British schoolchildren are among the most stressed and unhappy in the developed world because of the pressures of modern life, academics have claimed.
More under-16s in this country are failing to develop properly at a young age because they spend too much time unsupervised in front of televisions, games consoles and the internet in their bedrooms instead of playing outside.
Schoolchildren in Britain are among the most tested in the Western world because of formal schooling at an increasingly young age and the general influence of modern life, according to a new study.
Childcare experts say British children are also more likely to be exposed to junk food and poor diets than in other countries.
The shocking claims emerged as the Save Childhood Movement launched its bid to highlight the multiple threats facing young people.
The movement plan to campaign on a number of issues, including health, education, technology and commercial pressures which could hinder the development of children.
Wendy Ellyatt, the group's development director, said the launch reflected increased fears over the state of modern childhood.
She told the Daily Telegraph: 'Recent research that shows that children in the UK are some of the most pressurized, unhappy and commercially vulnerable in the world.
'Children are living increasingly sedentary, media-saturated lives and are spending less and less time in contact with the natural world.
Computer games and a general media-saturated lifestyle are said to affect a child's development.
'This is having profound consequences for our children’s health, especially with regard to what has been called the ‘modern epidemic’ of obesity.
'With increasing fears about traffic and stranger-danger, children’s freedom to play outside has been profoundly restricted and yet statistically the most dangerous place to be is actually in their own home and bedrooms, especially with so many children now having access to unsupervised digital technology.
The move by the Save Childhood Movement comes after a study five years ago ranked Britain bottom out of 21 developed nations for child welfare, and third bottom for educational standards.
