Teenage girl 'dies from carbon monoxide poisoning and three of her family are injured' at campsite

Hello Friends!

A teenage girl has died and three of her family members are being treated in hospital with suspected carbon monoxide poisoning after an incident at a campsite in Shropshire.

Paramedics and police were called to the campsite in Bucknell shortly before 10am this morning where four people were found to be suffering with suspected carbon monoxide poisoning.

After attempts at CPR, the girl was pronounced dead at the scene while a man, woman and boy were taken to the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital where their condition was said to be serious.

It is thought that a barbecue stove left inside the tent may have been the cause of carbon monoxide poisoning.
Fellow camper Geoff Brookes, 57, a design engineer from Kidderminster, said the family had taken it into one of the tents because it was cold.

He said: 'We heard they had taken a barbecue stove into the tent. Carbon monoxide is a silent killer.
'There was nothing they could do for the girl. They had three family sized tents and they were all camped together. They seemed like a normal, happy group enjoying a Bank Holiday weekend.

'When we woke up there were ambulances, two fire engines and an air ambulance and the paramedics were trying to save the girl.'
'I can't believe this has happened.'

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: 'Crews arrived at the camp site to find CPR being carried out on a girl who was in cardiac arrest.

'Ambulance crews continued resuscitation efforts in an attempt to restart the girl’s heart.
'Sadly, despite their best efforts nothing could be done to save the girl and she was confirmed dead on scene.

'A boy, believed to be 11 years old, was suffering from suspected carbon monoxide poisoning.
'Crews and the doctor began oxygen therapy and, due to his serious condition, the boy was airlifted to Royal Shrewsbury Hospital for emergency treatment.

'Paramedics continued to monitor the boys condition on route to hospital.
'A woman and man were also given oxygen therapy by ambulance crews before being taken by land ambulance on blue lights to the same hospital for further treatment.'

The camp site is in the grounds of The Baron pub - run by Deborah and Phil Wright.
Mrs Wright, 43, said they were part of large family group staying in three tents on the site. They were not from the Shropshire area.

She said: 'Another family member found them and raised the alarm.
'A female doctor staying at the camp site performed CPR on the girl while a call was made for an ambulance.

'Nothing like this has happened before. It's absolutely tragic.
'We are devastated by it. My heart goes out to the family.'

Mr Wright added: 'They seemed like a lovely family, about 8 of them in total.
'They had three three man tents arranged around a central eating area with a gazebo.
'I don't know how the barbeque came to be in their tent rather than in outside.

'There was only a story about someone else dying due to a disposable barbeque in the news a few months ago.
'I have to say I didn't know how dangerous they could be until I read that story.

'It's so tragic, they had only arrived last night to stay, they were booked in to eat tonight with us but they obviously chose to cook for themselves last night.

'The alarm was raised by another member of the family who had been in a different tent.
'I didn't see in the tent but I believe they were all found unconcious.

'The two helicopters landed in the field next to the site to rush the four ill people away.
'A 14-year-old died and her 10-year-old brother is in hospital with their parents. They were a young couple in their thirties I believe.'

According to Phil the campsite is set up for 5 caravans with various tents allowed around them.
The site is open all year round to people wishing to visit this picturesque part of the country.
