NDLEA destroys 14,000kg drugs

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency on Wednesday destroyed over 14,000 kilogrammes of narcotic drugs seized by the Ogun State Command in Abeokuta.

The drugs consist of 14,022.827kg of cannabis, 557 pinches of cocaine, 101 pinches of heroin and 50 pinches of amphetamines.

NDLEA Chairman, Alhaji Ahmadu Giade, said the destruction of the drugs showed the determination of the agency to create conducive environment which guaranteed the safety of life and property.

A statement by the agency’s spokesman, Mr. Mitchel Ofoyeju, quoted Giade as saying, “The safety of our country tomorrow depends on our counter-narcotic measures today. We are working on strategies to arrest the development and prevent the situation from degenerating.”

The statement added that Governor Ibikunle Amosun, who donated an operational vehicle to the state command of the NDLEA, urged the agency to work harder.

The governor, who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Taiwo Adeoluwa, said when there were no hard drugs, the state government would achieve its developmental goals.

The state Commander of the NDLEA, Mohammed Mohammed, also described the drug situation as alarming.
