Police re-arrest barons who bribed NDLEA with N5m

Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar, Giade

Hello Friends!

Suspected drug barons, who were released by the National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency, have been re-arrested by the police.

A source told PUNCH Metro that the barons allegedly bribed some NDLEA officials with N5m before they regained their freedom.

The barons were re-arrested on May 2, 2012 following a tip-off that they were back in business on Aka Road, Uyo.

Wondering how the suspects identified simply as Beauty and Rose regained their freedom, the policemen probed them and discovered that they bribed the NDLEA officials.

When their apartment was searched, our source said large quantities of cocaine, heroin, and marijuana were found there.

Our source said the release of the women and their re-arrest were already causing disaffection between the police and the NDLEA.

It was learnt that immediately the suspects were re-arrested, they were transferred from Area ‘C’ Police Command to the Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation.

Our source said, “The police had long transferred the women to CID because of possible attack by their friends and relatives.

“There have been frequent visits by friends and officials of the NDLEA with regards to these women. The police are not sure what they are up to. But security matter is a serious matter; no serious-minded security man must tolerate this.

“This is a serious matter. The NDLEA must investigate its men and bring the culprits to book. This act is a dent on our image and the country.”

Successive visits to Area ‘C’ Command by our correspondent to ascertain the true position of things and also to speak with the women proved abortive, as the police insisted that the issue was NDLEA’s affairs.

The Sector Commander of the NDLEA, Mrs. Ruth Obi, confirmed the incident, saying the matter was being investigated.

She said the agency was determined to rid the command of undesirable elements.

Obi said some NDLEA senior officials had been sent to Uyo from Lagos for a thorough investigation into the matter.
