Hello Friends!

Here is a sad update on the report we brought you yesterday about the 95 year old grandfather who died with his grand children as a result of generator fumes...

Miss Ugonna Nwadjideobi, the only survivor in Friday night’s incident in which four people were killed by generator fumes in Urum, Anambra State, has died, family sources said on Monday.

Ugonna was rushed to Crest Specialist Hospital, Akwa, after the tragedy in which her grandfather, 95-year-old Sopuru Nwankwo, her two brothers, Chigozie (9) and Dubem (7) and her cousin, Favour Nwankwo, died of suspected carbon monoxide poisoning.

Ugonna’s father, Mr. Charles Nwajideobi, had said she was rushed to the hospital where she was placed on oxygen before she was further referred to the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, Enugu.

The oxygen was removed from her as she was taken to Enugu. Ugonna died in Enugu before she could get medical attention.

The family of the deceased is now accusing the hospitals of causing the death of their daughter.

Charles said, “The hospital removed the oxygen mask worn by my daughter and said we should take the girl to Enugu without it.

“And immediately, we got to the gate of the hospital (UNTH), my daughter gave up the ghost, and we are saying that if the hospital had allowed us to carry the girl with the oxygen, she would not have died.”

Though the Medical Director of Crest, Dr. E. I Onwubuya, was not around when reporters visited the hospital on Monday, one of the doctors, Sam Okafor, said he would not react since he was not in the hospital when the deceased was brought in.

Apart from the 95-year-old grandfather of the children, the remains of the other three boys and the girl have been buried.

The traditional ruler of Urum, Dr. Benedict Nweke, told the reporters that the community had never experienced such a tragedy before.

He said it was a taboo to bury two people from the same family at once in the village, adding the community was still disturbed about it.

Nweke said the community was going to find out what really caused the death of the five persons, saying that the view that they were killed by carbon monoxide poisoning was unacceptable.

The deceased were said to have gone to sleep while they put on a generator. Though many attributed the death to carbon monoxide poisoning from the generator fumes, some villagers, including Nwajideobi, suspected they were poisoned because of the foam coming out of their mouths.

Our correspondent gathered that no autopsy was conducted on the deceased before they were buried. The family said they had prayed for the survival of Ugonna so that she could tell them what actually happened.

The state government was yet to respond to the incident.
