Hello Friends!
When the news broke that four students of UNIPORT Ugonna, Lloyd, Tekena and Chidiaka were beaten to death before they were set ablaze by an Irate Mob in ALUU Community, the whole country was in shock.
The young undergraduates were accused of various grave offences-from stealing to Cultism.
Emerging facts across Nigeria have it that the 4 victims were neither armed robbers nor cultists as earlier speculated.
One of the stories being circulated on the social Media has it that one of the victims, Ugonna actually went to collect the money owed him by a friend and somehow, during the course of collecting the money, an argument ensued.
The debtor then raised a false alarm alerting the indigenes of the community to come to his rescue, and sadly, there had been reports of incessant theft/robberies in that community. And so the boys were rounded -up taken to the Chief and even though they pleaded their innocence.
They were then stripped, paraded as robbers, beaten and subsequently burned to death. The outcry of the killings of these young man cut down in their prime, is their emerging bright future.
Two of these guys, Ugonna, a.k.a Tipsy and Lloyd a.k.a Big L. who were cousins were promising musicians who recently did a rap song.
The duo titled the rap song, Aint No Love in The Heart of the City.
Just like the message of the song, the residents of Aluu community showed no love on the four students as they were brutally murdered in the heart of the city, penultimate Friday, without a blink from any of the security agencies.
Rap music had made Lloyd and Ugonna popular in UNIPORT. As upcoming artistes, they both won a rap contest, tagged "Rap Attack" where star rapper, Vector was the judge. They have also been on tour with Kenni's music All Stars In Owerri were they dazzled the audience and it was evident that they were stars in the making who were cut down in the prime.
Ugonna, from all indications, lived a comfortable life. Photos that emerged after his death showed that he lived a life of affluence as some pictures even suggested that he was widely travelled. One of the pictures released was reportedly taken in London.
Also, the pictures of the other undergraduates were not so different and it is surprising that they were branded as thieves who had stolen mobile phones and a laptop.
One of the victims, Chidiaka who is fondly called Alladin is said to be a funny lad who enjoyed making people laugh. He was equally talented and could give a professional comedian a run for his money.
In an interview conducted by "Spaceman" a thoroughbred broadcaster on Radio Port Harcourt, the victims, friends described the lifestyles of the murdered young guys as fantastic. This is not a matter of heresy. I had personal dealings with them, in fact, the truth is, Tekena wasn't feeling fine that week. Lloyd, Ugonna and Tekena were nothing close to being cultist or criminals.
They were wonderful people who had so much respect for themselves, their family and the school. They were people who had clear vision of what they want for themselves. If you check through their facebook page and their twitter page, you would realize that those boys had vision, so it is wicked for anybody to assume that Ugonna, Tipsy as he was fondly called, Lloyd, (Big L) and Tekena were cultists. It is cruel to attach such allegation to them.
Another of their friends Audu Chizee, who is also a musician also said something about his late pals.
"I stumbled into the pictures a day after my rehearsal and I felt very bad because these are guys I do music with. I later saw the clips, I would tell you it was the worst moment of my life I saw Cannibalism, I saw wickedness, wouldn't even pray that my enemies experience such agony.
These are bright boys who came in through basic. They were very brilliant, they were boys you could call the fine boys of school, they were well loved by everybody. For me, I just saw 4 lights been put out of the world. They just quenched the light out of these guys who had a bright future. Tekena is just 19 yeas old, he will be 20 next month. They are artistes like me, they have dreams like me, I saw the future of rap music in them"
Lloyd's Mum, Mrs. Jane Toku, says her son's death will always haunt her. She expressed shock that the crowd could watch how her son and his friends were gruesomely murdered. Jane said "When we got there, one of them was still breathing. He was gasping for breath, but the crowd. they were all watching while my baby (Lloyd) was butchered. Come to my area and ask questions about the child I trained.
Penultimate Sunday, we went to church, Salvation Ministry, that is where he worships. We all went together for second service. He stayed back for the remaining service. When he came back, he started preparing to go to school. I can still see him as I talk to you.
"He brought out a book: "How Faith Works by David Ibiyomie and he said 'Mummy, read this book, you will know what faith is all about. By the time I come back on Friday, you will tell me what faith is all about.
"Ever since, I have been moving around with that book, so that I could read and not get him angry when he comes back from school and ask me about what I learnt from the book.
"Thursday was his Daddy's birthday. He (Lloyd) called him and wished him happy birthday. When his Daddy asked him if he would be coming home to celebrate the birthday with the family, he promised to be back on Friday after lectures.
"But On Friday Morning, we got a call that my son was being lynched . How can I erase the fact that my son was lynched from, my mind? He studied very hard and got admission into the University"
Anne, Tekena Elkanah's sister, was said to have witnessed the gruesome murder of her brother. It was reported in some media that she claimed that a police van was seen at a distance while the mob snuffed life out of the boys and that when she continued pleading with the mob to release her brother on the grounds that he was innocent, she was accused of being an accomplice.
Investigations also revealed that Mr. Oyema Baringa, father of one of the victims, Chiadika , based in Port Harcourt was reported to be a top Senior Manager at the Pipelines and Products Marketing Company (PPMC), a subsidiary of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC).
At the burial of his son, Chiadika, he told a relative that he handed over the murderers to God. Those identified as UNIPORT students are Biringa Chidika Lordson, a 200 Level Theatre Arts Students with Matriculation number U2010/1805036; Ugonna Kelechi Obuzar, year two Geology student with Matriculation number U2010/5565149 and Mike Lloyd Toku., year 2 Civil Engineering student with matriculation number (U2010/3010094.)
13 suspects including the traditional ruler who allegedly ordered the killing of the students have been arrested and charged to court. And last week Tuesday a massive protest rocked Port Harcourt over the murder of the four students.
University of Port Harcourt lecturers, students and members of the National Association of Nigeria Students (NANS) from South South and South West blocked the road at Choba Junction, beside the University.
12 houses belonging to the suspected killers of the UNIPORT students were razed at Aluu.
