Popular Nigeria Television Authority broadcaster, Sele Eradiri , is dead. She passed on at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital early Tuesday morning, at the age of 57.
Until her death, Eradiri was Assistant Director, News, at NTA 2 Lagos Network Centre but she was popular for the weekly national programme, Newsline.
According to reports, she died after her condition deteriorated following a treatment of an undisclosed illness in India, which was said to be successful.
Born Selegberha Eradiri on March 13 1955, into the royal family of Eradiri in Agudama Ekpetiama, Bayelsa State, she attended Gbagada Girls Secondary School, Lagos.
She worked briefly with NTA, Port Harcourt as a presenter before she proceeded to the United States where she studied Broadcast Journalism at the Florida Atlantic University, Boca Raton, Florida. On her return to Nigeria, Eradiri went back to broadcasting after her youth service as a presenter and reporter with the NTA.
She was known among her colleagues as “the roving reporter” who would make a story out of nothing. She was one of the ace reporters of Newsline, the flagship programme of NTA, and headed the Roving Unit of NTA Network News for three years.
Meanwhile, some of her colleagues in the industry have expressed shock at her death. Chairman, House of Representatives Committee Diaspora Affairs, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, who also once a Newsline presenter, said Eradiri was a sincere friend and a dedicated journalist of repute.
“I am glad that some of us her friends could do the bit we could for her. I recall visiting her in hospital in India and we were all ecstatic that the operation was successful. She had planned to embark on an awareness campaign on fibroids, advising women with fibroid to remove it even if it is painful. Sele would certainly be in peace with her maker. I definitely will miss that unmistakable voice when she calls and says, ‘egbestic’,” she said.
The Managing Director of the News Agency of Nigeria, Mrs. Oluremi Oyo, who expressed shock at the news, said Eradiri meant a lot not just to her establishment but all those who benefitted from her professionalism.
“I did not know her personally but she was quite promising and I am always sad to hear about the death of promising and young colleagues. May her soul rest in peace,” she stated.
An Assistant Director of Programmes with NTA E-TV, Mrs Helen Ojeleye, who described Eradiri’s death as a big loss to NTA family, said the deceased was unique in her dedication and passion towards her job.
