It is indeed ideal that for justice and fairness to be seen to have been carried out, some form of clear explanation with logical proof where available, should be provided by the State in cases like this. Keyamo is NOT out of line at all...

A legal practitioner, Mr. Festus Keyamo, has asked the Federal Government to conduct a coroner inquest into the death of his client, Mr. Tiemkemfa Francis Osovwo (aka General Gbokos), while in the Kuje Prison, Abuja custody on March 2.

The deceased was among the accused persons on trial for the October 1, 2010 bombing.

Keyamo, in a letter to the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Bello Adoke, and obtained by our correspondent on Wednesday, said he had the instructions of the wife of the deceased, Mrs. Philo Osovwo, to seek the inquest.

He said, “We urge you to use your good offices to apply to court to cause a Coroner’s Inquest to be conducted into the cause of the death of the deceased in line with Section 30 of the Coroner’s Act, CAP 489, Laws of the Federal Capital Territory, 2006.

“The deceased and his co-accused were treated in a very harsh and inhumane manner. For instance, the deceased was not allowed to carry out any form of physical exercise; he was not allowed to worship like other inmates awaiting trial; he was also not given the needed medical attention.

“On the December 8, 2011, the deceased cell and that of the three other accused persons was fumigated with a dangerous and unknown substance, whilst they were in the cell.

“Even when his health condition degenerated and the attention of the prison authority was drawn to his state of health, he was refused the needed treatment, which later caused his sudden and untimely death in prison custody.”

Meanwhile, an Abuja Federal High Court on Wednesday stayed proceedings in the case of the alleged masterminds of the Abuja bombing.

Justice Gabriel Kolawole, also ordered the Nigeria Prisons Service to stop the alleged maltreatment of the suspects.

The suspects, through their counsel, Mr. Oghenevwo Otemu, had since the commencement of the matter consistently complained to the court about the harsh conditions of their stay in detention, and they claim that their colleague, Osvwo, died as a result of their alleged maltreatment by the prison authorities.

At the resumption of hearing on Wednesday, the defence counsel, led by Otemu, told the judge that the suspects are still subjected to the same alleged harsh conditions they had been facing before Osvwo’s death.
