Lawyer, others punished for noisemaking in court

Hello Friends!

A mild drama occurred in an Osogbo Magistrate’s Court on Thursday when Magistrate Adewunmi Makanjuola, ordered a lawyer and two others to jump up and down on the court premises.Makanjuola had sent his orderly to warn those making a noise outside the court to stop while a case was ongoing.

But shortly after the orderly returned to the court, the noise began again.
Makanjuola, who was furious, ordered that those involved be brought before him.
When they were brought before him, the magistrate asked them to choose between being put in the dock and leaping like frogs on the premises for five minutes.

Makanjuola said their action had put the court in contempt, stressing that it (court) must be accorded respect at all times. The lawyer and the two others, whose names were not recorded by the court, chose to leap.

Consequently, the magistrate told his orderly to take them outside the courtroom for the five-minute punishment. When the punishment was ongoing, court workers and litigants watched the men in amusement. The trio later appeared before the magistrate to inform him that they had completed the punishment.

Makanjuola warned them against a recurrence, stressing that they did not have the authority to disrespect the court.“Even if the court is not sitting, you should have respect for it and the state, much less of when the court is in progress,” the magistrate said.

But he later apologized for treating the lawyer “like a novice.”
