Fugitive 'cannibal' porn star arrested in Berlin after escaping police raid on his Paris hotel room

The international manhunt for gay porn star killer Luka Rocco Magnotta has ended with his arrest in the German capital Berlin.

Magnotta, 29, was seized in an Internet cafe on the Karl-Marx-Strasse in the working class Neukoelln district of the city after catching an overnight bus from Paris on Friday.

Neukoelln is also the venue for numerous gay bars and sordid sex joints frequented by tourists and seedy locals.

Closing the net: Interpol had notified authroities in 190 countries to be on the lookout for Luka Magnotta, who was arrested today in Germany.

Police sources say the cafe was raided at shortly after midday. Magnotta was online when armed officers brandishing their weapons pinned him to the floor and handcuffed him.
The arrest brought to an end an international trawl spanning thousands of miles and hundreds of police officers across two continents.

Magnotta, branded the 'Canadian Psycho', is wanted for the gruesome videotaped murder and dismemberment of a student in Montreal.

He fled to France where his mobile telephone calls gave him away to police on his trail.

As well as the murder he faces charges of threatening Canada's prime minister after mailing a severed foot to his Conservative party headquarters.
A hand addressed to the Liberal party of Canada was found at the PM's offices last Tuesday, while a torso was discovered in a suitcase on a rubbish dump in Montreal, outside Magnotta's apartment building.
Police identified the victim as Chinese university student Jun Lin, 33, who they said had dated Magnotta and had a sexual relationship with him.

Sightings: Witnesses say they saw a person matching Bagnotta's description at Parisian bars, such as Le Petit Batignolles bar. Police in the French capital had lost Bagnotta before he turned up in Germany.



Witnesses said they saw Magnotta getting on the bus at the Bagnolet international bus station in the eastern suburbs of the French capital on Friday night.

The Eurolines bus company said they had assisted police in handing over bus station CCTV footage and paperwork on passengers.

Magnotta, who is known also under the name Eric Clinton Newman and Vladimir Romanov, worked as a porn actor and also as a rentboy under the name 'Angel.'

Over the years he underwent plastic surgery, frequently wore makeup and dyed his hair to change his appearance.

Victim: Jun Lin, 33, was a Chinese student who had moved to Montreal to study. He dated Magnotta.

Another man told police he had allowed the suspected killer to stay with him for two days - and had recognised his house guest from photographs published in the media.
Police closed in on a hotel where he was believed to be staying - but he had left before officers arrived and slipped through their net. Some of his belongings were recovered from the hotel room and are undergoing DNA testing.

Online postings, believed to be the work of Bagnotta, included a short animation that involved a bloody hand print and the phrase 'It was Luka Magnotta'. Police say he was enjoying his notoriety. 

Threatened: A hand and foot belonging to the slain Jun Lin was sent to the offices of Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

 

Interpol posted a photo on its website of a man fitting Magnotta's description passing through airport security - however the photo was undated and the airport was not identified.
Detectives think Magnotta, who also used aliases Eric Clinton Newman (his birth name) and Vladimir Romanov, was heading for Eastern Europe.

He now faces a range of charges, including murder, defiling a corpse, threatening the Canadian prime minister and using the mail system for delivering 'obscene, indecent, immoral or scurrilous' material.

Police Commander Ian Lafreniere said detectives believed Magnotta fled from Canada to France on May 26, based on evidence they found at his apartment and a blogsite - where he wrote about how to disappear.

Parisian officers said the suspected killer stayed for two nights with a gay man he met in a nightclub before his terrified host spotted his photo on the internet.
Witnesses came forward while Magnotta was on the run, claiming to have spotted him in the trendy Bastille district in the east of Paris, an area of the city highly popular with young British expats.

One bar owner told police: 'He came into my bar and sat drinking and chatting. He seemed very excited.'
A police source said another man had put Magnotta up in his flat for two nights early last week after meeting him in a gay nightclub.
The police source said: 'After he left, the man realised who he had had staying and contacted us.

'It is then thought he went out in the evenings drinking in the Bastille district and staying in a cheaper hotel in the east of the city.'

Changeable image: Police suspected that Magnotta was disguising himself as a woman to evade capture, having been on the run for almost two weeks. A sketch of what he may look like was released.

Another barman described in detail how he believed Magnotta had also drank in his bar in the western Paris district of Batignolles last Friday night.

The man told police: 'He seemed very nervous and speaking in English he ordered a coke to take away.

'I put a bottle on the bar and told him we didn't do take-away and he had to drink it there.
'He then began speaking in French with a strong accent and told me he was very thirsty. He knocked the Coca-Cola back in one.

'Another man with a very well-honed physique then came in and started talking to him. They clearly knew each other.

'The film is just so graphic and disturbing. Imagine the worst horror movie you’ve ever seen and it’s worse than that and it’s real. The murderer just tears the victim apart like a doll''

They both started trying to chat up other clients before they paid in cash and left, walking off in the direction of a nearby hotel.'

A receptionist at a four-star hotel near the Champs-Elysees also told us she believed Magnotta had stayed there the same night.
The Paris police source said: 'She later identified him from a photo.'
Police suspect Magnotta filmed the murder after a video was posted online showing a man stabbing another man with an ice pick while the victim lies naked and tied up.

The first man later reveals he has slashed the other man's throat and goes on to dismember the corpse and perform sexual acts with it.

Another online video shows a man who looks like Magnotta committing violent acts against kittens. For nearly two years, animal-rights activists have been looking for the man who posted the sick videos.
Mr Lafreniere said: 'This is the kind of guy that's looking for attention. He likes to glorify himself with the web. The web will glorify him and the web is also going to bring him back to justice because there are a lot of pictures of him out there and it will help lead him to us.'

Mr Lin was a Concordia University student from the central Chinese city of Wuhan, according to the Chinese consulate in Montreal.
Police believe he was killed and his body dismembered either on May 24 or 25. A ten-minute video showing what transpired was then posted online.

Six months ago, Magnotta was living in a £40-a-night room above the Fusilier Inn in Wembley, north London, while sightseeing in the capital.

He was confronted by journalists after posting an Internet film showing a live kitten being fed to a snake. In an email to The Sun in December, he supposedly said: ‘You will be hearing from me again. This time, however, the victims won’t be small animals.’ He sent a similar warning to the BBC.

At the same time, he appears to be denying that he is the person in the kitten-killing videos, writing on his own website: ‘Once and for all, I will set the record straight. Many hoax websites are created using my image and name, posing as me to seem more believable...

'I feel I don't need to list them specifically but people need not be told, not to believe what they read and to take it as fact.’

Magnotta is said to have once dated Karla Homolka, a notorious Canadian sex killer who slaughtered schoolgirls.
