Hello Friends!

The Save Nigeria Group on Monday instituted a legal action at the Federal High Court in Lagos against the Federal Government on the withdrawal of N2.5tn for subsidy payments from the Consolidated Revenue Fund instead of the N245bn approved in the 2011 Appropriation Act.

SNG Convener, Pastor Tunde Bakare, said this at a press conference in Lagos on Monday.

Bakare lamented that President Goodluck Jonathan had not directly addressed the matter ‘‘except through remarks on his behalf by presidential aides.’’

In the Originating Summons, the Plaintiff asked the court, among other things, to determine whether, ‘‘Having regard to the provisions of Sections 80(2) (3) & 81(1) & (2) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), whether the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria or any other person acting on his instructions can lawfully withdraw and expend monies from the Consolidation Revenue Fund or any other public funds of the Federation without authorisation by an Appropriation Act, Supplementary Appropriation Act or any Act of the National Assembly.’’

Bakare stated that the group was ready to give “reasonable time” before its planned protests on the subsidy fraud.

He said, “We are ready to extend the rope to see what comes out of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission’s promise within a reasonable time.”

The SNG said, ‘‘We are a responsible organisation prepared to exhaust as many options as are available to us, only opting for public protests as a very last resort. However, all we have heard hitherto has been mere rhetoric with no concrete actions from constituted authorities. An ethical President ought to have made a national broadcast on this series of events unrivalled anywhere in the world.’’

The group added that the statement of the Attorney- General of the Federation, Mr. Mohammed Adoke, that the lower legislative chamber’s subsidy probe was merely fact-finding, was an attempt to deny justice by luring the nation into forgetfulness.

Promising that it would not allow the probe reports to be swept under the carpet like others in the past, the group called on Nigerians to be vigilant.

It stated, “We will watch every step they take with our firm resolve that this report will not go into the mortuary of probe reports. We call on Nigerians to remain vigilant as they will be hearing from us periodically in this season of systematic and sustained campaigns we have entered on the cusp of unprecedented change.’’
