Hello Friends!

In a rare display of good neigbourliness, the Ijaw in Warri and environs joined the Itsekiri in celebrating the 25th anniversary boat regatta of the Olu of Warri Ogiame Atuwatse II.

In the boat regatta, staged at the Delta Boat Yard, Ijaw and Itsekiri displayed their mastery of boat handling and manouvring to the admiration of the crowd which, at first, were apprehensive about the intent of the Ijaw who had turned out in large numbers in beautifully decorated boats to celebrate with their neigbours.

In the spirit of the new friendship displayed by the Ijaw, the heavens opened and rain, never witnessed before in sunny weather, poured down on the participants and audience.

Days before the Olu’s 25th anniversary boat regatta, there was the speculation that peace in Warri would be breached.
To further butress the cordial relationship between the two ethnic groups, since the beginning of the festivities marking the 25th anniversary of the Olu of Warri, however, people from all walks of life have identified with the Itsekiri.

Some of the people, who spoke to Sunday Vanguard on what they witnessed at the boat reggata, said an end has come to the conflict between the two ethnic groups.

Culled from The Vanguard.
