Hello Friends!

The Lagos State Government on Wednesday raised the alarm over the state of the bridges in Ijora and Apapa areas of the state, calling on the Federal Government to conduct an expert assessment over their safety.

The Commissioner for the Environment, Tunji Bello, and his Transport counterpart, Kayode Opeifa, made the call while monitoring the efforts to stop indiscriminate parking and illegal encroachments along Oshodi-Apapa Expressway and Ijora.

Bello, who lamented the damage to the bridges in Ijora, said the Federal Government needed to act quickly to avoid calamity.

He said, “You can see that there are cracks and partial structural failure. This is a major defect. The coast is clear for the federal ministry of works to move in now and access structural integrity of the bridges.”

He said the state government was determined to make sure that the movement of tankers and illegal occupants from the expressway and the bridges was permanent.

“We are clearing the areas now and this will take about three weeks. We will then start beautification, landscaping and other efforts to make this place good for business,” he said.

Bello added that arms, ammunitions and other weapons were recovers during the eviction of illegal occupiers from under the bridges.

Opeifa said the government would continue to ensure free flow of traffic, security and a good business atmosphere in the areas.

He said those selling vehicles at Berger end of the expressway had been told to quit to enable the government to beautify the area.

He said, “We are committed to sustaining the friendly business atmosphere that we started on Monday when we dislodge illegal occupants in this area. We appeal to stakeholders to cooperate with government by reporting defaulters.”
