Hello Friends!
Doctors who were sacked by the Lagos State Government on Monday have threatened to institute fresh suits against the government if it refuses to reverse the sack before May 16.
Their suit filed at the National Industrial Court, Lagos on April 24, 2012 to pre-empt their sacking or any disciplinary action from being taken against them and fixed for Wednesday (yesterday) for mention could not go on.
The proceedings were stalled due to the absence of the presiding judge, Justice Benedict Kanyip. The court registrars then fixed the matter for May 16.
However, their planned suits, according to their counsel, Mr. Bamidele Aturu, may include one ordering the government to reverse the sack and another seeking damages against the government due to alleged “embarrassment and psychological trauma” the doctors had been made to go through because of the sack.

The state government had sacked 788 doctors in the government’s service because of their alleged refusal to respond to a query over a three-day warning strike they embarked upon between March 11 and 13, 2012.
Aturu, who spoke with our correspondent on Wednesday, said he would explore all legal options to upturn the sack.
He said, “The government, by its action has created another cause of action. We may need to file another suit quashing the sack, another one seeking damages, perhaps in trillions of Naira against the government if it fails to reverse sack before May 16.”
Aturu said the government’s action was “illegal and reckless” having been allegedly carried out despite the government being aware of a pending suit on the matter.
However, the state Attorney-General, Mr. Ade Ipaye, who represented the state government, denied government’s knowledge of the suit before the decision to sack the doctors was made.
