Bombing of varsities can divide Nigeria —SSANU

Bayero University, Kano

Hello Friends!

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities has warned that the recent attack on the Bayero University, Kano, portends a grave danger to the destiny of this country.

The National President of SSANU, Mr. Samson Chijioke Ugwoke, said the security of lives and property must be taken seriously for the universities to effectively carry out their statutory responsibility of promoting teaching, learning, research and development.

He condemned the BUK killings which resulted in the death of several innocent Nigerians and the attack of media houses in Abuja and Kaduna.

The SSANU President said in an electronic mail on Saturday that it was improper for the press to be made to perform its responsibility of enlightening the public with relevant information in an atmosphere of threat.

“SSANU condemns entirely, the recent improved attacks on Bayero University Kano; Gombe State University, Gombe and the offices of THISDAY, the Nation and Sun newspapers which resulted in the death of many innocent Nigerians.

“The choice of university communities for attack by the terrorists portends serious danger to the future of Nigerians and Nigeria as a nation.

“For universities across the country to effectively perform their statutory roles of teaching, learning, research and community development, the security of lives and property within the campuses must not be in question.

“Also the press as the watchdog of the society should not be allowed to operate under any threat in the discharge of its role of objective information, education and entertainment to Nigerian,” the statement read in part.

He called on vice chancellors to provide adequate security in campuses of the various universities across the country in response to the security challenge.

The SSANU president also urged the Federal Government to live up to its responsibility of providing security for the citizenry.

“It is the primary responsibility of any responsible and responsive government the world over to provide and ensure security of her citizens but the present administration seems not to be doing enough to step the spate of terror being unleashed on innocent Nigerians on daily basis,” he said.

He further called on the government to ensure urgent prosecution of fuel importers indicted by the report of House of Representatives Ad Hoc Committee on the Management of the Subsidy led by Alhaji Lawan Farouk.

He said that immediate prosecution of those who committed the subsidy fraud remained the only means of regaining the confidence of Nigerians.
