The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board on Monday pegged the 2012 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination National Cut-off Mark at 180.
It equally pegged the National Cut-off Mark for admissions into polytechnics, colleges of education and other diploma-awarding institutions at 160.
This decision marks the official commencement of the 2012 admission into universities and other tertiary institutions across Nigeria.
The decision to set the cut-off points was taken after the 2012 combined Policy Committee meeting on admissions to Degree-awarding institutions, National Diploma, Nigeria Certificate in Education and National Innovation Diploma-awarding institutions in Abuja.
Minister of Education, Prof. Ruqayyatu Rufa’i, who chaired the meeting, appealed to the various institutions to adhere strictly to admission guidelines.
Rufai said the guidelines stipulated a 70:30 ratio in favour of Technology/Non-Technology for National Diploma programmes while universities and colleges of education are to maintain a 60:40 Science/Arts ratio.
The minister added that the insitution must each observe “the admission criteria based on merit, catchment area and educationally less-developed states in accordance with the Federal Government’s guidelines.”
The Registrar and Chief Executive of JAMB, Prof. ‘Dibu Ojerinde, cautioned Private universities against admitting students illegally.
He observed that most universities were unable to fill their admission during the last admission exercise,” Ojerinde said.
