Hello Friends!

A Federal High Court in Calabar, Cross River State has ordered the Nigerian Army, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps to pay N150m for killing one Mr. Efenji Ochikiri.
The deceased was tortured to death in Afrike I (Egurude) community in Bekwarra Local Government Area of the state on October 22, 2006, when soldiers and NSCDC officials conducted a search in the community.

judgment in suit No: FHC/CA/CS/4/2007 on Wednesday, Justice Adeniyi Ademola, ordered the security agencies to pay the fine as compensation and damages for unlawful infringement and destruction of properties.

The court also ordered the security agencies to immediately release Ochikiri’s corpse in the custody of Monaya Hospital, Ogoja to his family for burial.
The plaintiffs, Mrs. Alice Ochikiri, Mr. Simon Egum, Mr. Igbaji Idoko, Mr. Ezekiel Egbung and Mr. Francis Ota, who are family members of the deceased, in 2007 instituted the suit against the Minister of Defence, Chief of Army Staff, NSCDC, the Federal Government and the Attorney-General of the Federation.

Although the Army and NSCDC had denied killing Ochikiri, they admitted carrying out an operation in the plaintiff’s community.

They claimed to have recovered large quantities of military arms and ammunition.
