Charles Taylor’s lawyers to appeal 50-year jail term

Hello Friends!

Lawyers to the former Liberian President, Charles Taylor, are to appeal the 50-year prison sentence handed to him by a United Nations-court in May, Dutch news agency ANP reported on Tuesday.

Taylor, 64, was sentenced to 50 years in jail by the Special Court for Sierra Leone for aiding and abetting war crimes and crimes against humanity during Sierra Leone’s conflict.

During the trial, Chief Prosecutor, Brenda Hollis, had called for an 80-year jail term.
The judge considered the demand “excessive.”

If his appeal fails, Taylor will spend his term in a British maximum security prison, although the defence said he should be imprisoned closer to Africa in order to allow him to see his family.
The former president was transferred to The Hague in mid-2006 amid fears that trying him in Freetown would pose a security threat.
