Lagos preacher heals bedridden Nollywood actor

Bedridden Nollywood actor, Enebeli Elebuwa was full of “praises and thanks” to Almighty God during the week as he has received his healing, courtesy of a Lagos based controversial preacher, Dr Sign Fireman.

The actor was struck by stroke late last year. Since then, his health has continued to deteriorate on each passing day. He was reportedly bedridden for months before he finally received healing from the “firebrand pastor”.

Fireman who came into prominence through the showbiz personalities that attend his church located in Surulere, was said to have been moved by the status of the ailing  actor.

He instructed his family to relocate the actor to the church where he (Fireman) prayed before Enebeli was healed of his life-threatening ailment.

A video posted on Youtube showed the high flying pastor taking steps with the actor, who looked physically drained and weak, after the healing.

Fireman could be heard asking Enebeli to walk and take “one step at a time … in the name of Jesus,” which, in the midst of clapping and shouting by the congregation, he strenuously adhered to.

Fireman happens to be one of the influential men of God in the country. His extravagance and extremely flashy lifestyle was brought to questioning by CAN recently. “Jesus Christ was never a poor man. He had an accountant following him around” he was quoted as saying.

I’ll not tamper with press freedom—Jonathan

President Goodluck Jonathan on Friday promised that his administration would have nothing to do with anybody who dared to tamper with the freedom of the press as enshrined in the constitution.

He said that as a firm believer in the right of the media, he would stop at nothing to ensure that journalists continue to carry out their duties without let or hindrance.

Jonathan made the pledge while declaring open the fourth triennial national delegates’ conference of the Nigerian Union of Journalists in Abuja.
The President advised that since all rights come with corresponding responsibility, journalists should learn to put the country first in their reports.

He said, “I am a firm believer in the right and obligation of the media as enshrined in our constitution. I assure you all today that under my leadership, journalists in our country will continue to fully enjoy their constitutional rights and freedom of expression.

“I am also fully convinced that the imperative of sustaining and nurturing our democracy required the existence of the very professional and practitioners of the mass media.

“My administration is conscious of the vital role that the mass media have to play in supporting our transformation agenda and is therefore committed to properly enhance the practice.
“It was in this regard that led to our enactment of the Freedom of Information law to enhance the ability of our dear practitioners to discharge their duties.

“My administration will have nothing to do with those who try to curtail or abuse the right of the mass media.”

While urging media practitioners to ensure that their accounts of events should be fair, balanced and accurate, Jonathan warned against manipulations by politicians and selfish people with sectional motives to the detriment of collective national interest.

He said journalists should make extra efforts to cross check their facts and ensure that only the truth is published.

Jonathan advised media houses against offering platforms to people with questionable character.
He noted that journalists in Nigeria had continued to play an important role in nation building.
 The President condemned the recent attacks on media houses by suspected terrorists and commended Nigerian journalists for remaining resolute in spite of the attacks.

He urged media practitioners to continue to foster peace, religious tolerance and harmony in the country.Jonathan seized the opportunity provided by the programme to deny his reported plan to sack his ministers.

Adulterated fuel depot uncovered in Lagos

ADEOLA BALOGUN uncovers the existence of an illegal depot in Lagos where fuel products are adulterated and distributed to consumers

Somewhere in Etal Close on Kudirat Abiola Way in Oregun, Lagos, some businessmen have set up an illicit depot, where diesel oil is adulterated and distributed to customers within and around the Lagos metropolis.

Investigations by SATURDAY PUNCH show that the depot is bordered by a large automobile warehouse near Welfare Bus Stop. A cartel of petroleum tanker drivers is believed to operate the facility in collaboration with some hoodlums in the neighbourhood.

Almost everyday, diesel-laden tankers discharge part of their cargo allegedly in exchange for adulterated fuel products at the depot.

Etal Close lies close to a slopy street where a popular hotel is situated. Seen from the lobby on the first floor of the hotel, the automobile warehouse looks like a glittering forest of cars displayed in beautiful rows.

Just down the hotel, the hulking frame of a church building stands in a T-junction. Everything else around the church seems normal. Yet, on the right hand side of the T-junction, the operators of the illegal fuel depot are busy carrying out their activities. To keep off prying eyes, they have screened off the depot with wooden panels.

For reasons best known to them, the owners of the depot have chosen a street on a steep slope, which is obviously unsuitable for articulated vehicles, for their illegal trade. Needless to stress, their products are said to be responsible for the rise in damaged injector engines in Lagos.

Why we left BBA

Ola: We had to choose health over wealth. I had hypertension. Even after I was placed on medication, it was still a bit high. I eventually chose to pull out of the show. I had to be smart. As I said, it is health over wealth. What if I had slumped and died on international TV? The story would have been different. People would have blamed me for not pulling out. Because of the kind of game we were playing, anxiety was sure to set in.

We were in a confined space with 27 other people, including this idiot (Chris) here with me. We were at one another’s neck. And then, there were pretty women in the house. They would go to take their bath and we would look at them and all that. Our blood certainly would rise just by looking at those females. Our leaving wasn’t a calculated thing. It wasn’t planned. Three hundred thousand dollars is such a big money for me to have let go just like that. But I had to be smart. It wasn’t manipulated.

We weren’t paid to leave the show. Mine wasn’t really an ailment. I had high blood pressure. It could happen to anybody. It is not as if it is a sickness per se. It wasn’t Mnet’s fault because they didn’t dictate the sickness. We were medically examined. I didn’t have high blood pressure before I entered the house. I am even grateful that it was discovered. That was how Sam Okwaraji just slumped and died. I would have been grooving one day and I would just slump and die. I would also advise everybody to take out time and check their blood pressure.

No disappointment

Chris: To be honest, I thought we would get to the final and eventually bring the cash back home. But you never can tell what would happen. A lot of people came with that same reason; they want to become winners of the show. But when they got into the house, it was a different thing. Some of them wanted to leave the house immediately. For me, health was more important than anything else. I needed the money, yes. But I don’t think I would take money over Ola’s health.

What if he had died on international TV and I eventually win? I wouldn’t have been able to spend the money. He is a fool though but he is my friend. The prize money is so huge but life is greater than it. I made the right decision to encourage him to leave because of his health and every reasonable person would have done same.

If he wouldn’t do same for me, it is left for him. It wouldn’t change the fact that I am his friend. There is no way you will be in that house and your blood pressure will not go up. Females will be touching you everywhere. The tasks and exercises can even get your blood pressure up. I would have loved to date a woman in the house but I wasn’t really interested that much. I wanted the money more. I need to help my family.

Impact of BBA

Chris: One day in that house can change lives. I spent two weeks in the house and it was awesome. It was short but huge as well. We didn’t know people loved us. We imparted greatly on fellow housemates. We don’t fake. We were so natural in the house. This is who we are and how we behave. It is unscripted. You saw what happened when we were leaving. It wasn’t an act. All the housemates cried. BBA house was so much fun even before we left. We had free food. We had free drinks. It was like a scholarship.

Ola: We were so real. People loved us. People cried for us. What else can I ask from God? People were wailing like kids. We were able to impart on lives for just two weeks that we stayed in the house. It was mad! It was simply incredible. We were so many in the house and it added to the fun. We had only one bathroom. We were so real. The only game there was the prize money.

Our friendship

Chris: We have known each other for more than 10 years. He is a foolish guy but he is my friend. In fact, we are fools. We used to model together. He knows the people I know and I know the people he knows. We just clicked and our friendship has grown over the years.

Ola: It is not how long we have known each other but how well. We bonded so well and that is what matters. He is not a fair weather friend. He is my buddy. We tell ourselves the truth. We don’t sweep things under the carpet. It has been wonderful. Our friendship is not hypocritical. The word friendship has been abused. We are not using our friendship as ‘try your luck.’ Chris is my friend for life. The situation wasn’t open for discussion. He said that if he were in my shoes, I would have done same for him. He is my boy.

Relationship
Chris: I am single. I don’t have a girlfriend and I am not searching. Women have plenty wahala. I don’t have money. Now, my fan base has increased. In a day, I can get more than 400 messages. It has been crazy.

Ola: Ah! I am a big boy now. In fact, I am a celeb. But really, this is not new to me. I was a model. I have been in the spotlight. I am not going to allow this particular spotlight to get to my head. But in the house, I liked a particular girl, Julia. She said she would come to Nigeria immediately she leaves the house. I am not saying something is going to come out of it. But I would rather marry somebody who I like so that after 20 years, I could still give her a peck and not ask myself who brought me into this trouble.

How we went for BBA
Chris: A lot of people called me and suggested I pair up with them for BBA. But I wasn’t interested. But when Ola called me, he just said, ‘Idiot, where are you? Let’s go for BBA.’ I agreed. He told me to fill the form and I told him he was mad. He was the person that filled the forms and sent them. Honestly, we came for the audition to have fun. We never knew we would be taken. We even dressed so funny. We were just misbehaving. After a couple of weeks, I got a call and he got a call that we’d been selected.

Ola: Chris doesn’t have talent so he couldn’t have thought of going into the BBA house. He doesn’t have any sense. I was the one that suggested we go for it. We went there with an open mind. People were asking us if we were sure we came for the audition. We said we didn’t know what we came to do. The people who auditioned were so shocked the way we answered their questions.

Regrets
Chris: The only regret we have is that we didn’t get the prize money. I wish we came back with that prize. Apart from that, life continues. Now that we are out, I hope Goldie wins since I am a full-fledged Nigerian. I am patriotic. But when you are in the house, friendship grows. Zainab was our very good friend. She is real. That was why we clicked. So, if Goldie doesn’t win, then let the money go to Zainab.

Ola: My regret is that I left my friends in the house. I miss them so much. You will not understand. Zainab is a mad girl. She was our great friend. As for who I wish to win, it would be very hard. I have not really watched the show. I don’t know how Goldie is in the house. I can only talk about the people I stayed in the house with. Zainab is not well. She is crazy. She doesn’t hide anything. I like real people and I know she will go places.

The future

Chris: I am a fashion designer and Ola is an interior decorator. We still have what we are doing. We are also into entertainment business. You will be seeing our faces on the pages of newspapers and on the television soon. We will be here for a long moment.

Ola: We might get into comedy. Basketmouth should be careful before we chase him out of the market. Every way is a way. We will do something. I was in entertainment before. I can still go back to it. We have been given the platform. I have to do the best with it.

May 29: Food prices soar by 300% …as purchasing power gets weaker

For the umpteenth time, the prices of food items have gone through the roof, investigations by SATURDAY PUNCH at major food markets in Lagos have shown.

The cost of importation, national insecurity, global climatic change, partial removal of fuel subsidy and lack of a thriving food policy are partly responsible for the current trend.

But one year into the Goodluck Jonathan Administration, the prices of almost all food items have tripled, making it more difficult for the poor to cope.

Currently, Nigeria spends a significant amount on the importation of wheat and rice among other food commodities, and rightly qualifies to be named an import dependent country in this respect.

Although Jonathan had indicated his intention to stop the importation of some staple foods, including rice and sugar by 2015, public opinion seeks to know what survival strategies would be put in place to forestall a scarcity.

A survey conducted in three major food markets in Lagos showed that prices of most of the food items had risen by over 300 per cent above the prices at which they were sold earlier this year.

At Oyingbo Market, notable as a wholesale and direct farm-to-market food centre, one of our correspondents found that patronage was poor, yet prices were unbearable.

The situation left the buyers lacking the sufficient purchasing power, while the sellers had meagre returns on investment.

It was found that comparing the prices to this time last year would be more heart-rending for the public, because the within-the-year rate of increase is worrisome.

At Oyingbo, a basket of Derica-brand of fresh tomatoes now sells at N14,000 as against N3,500-N4,000 at which it sold till March ending.

In a new behind-the-scenes video, the singer is seen preparing for her first series of comeback performances - starting tonight - since giving birth to daughter Blue Ivy in January.

The 30-year-old superstar is firmly in the driving seat, as she instructs her team on how she wants the staging to play out.

But she does admit to having a slight attack of the jitters.
Speaking on camera, wearing next to no make-up, she concedes: 'I feel a little nervous.'

Jitters: While a confident and assured performer, Beyonce admits to feeling a little nervous about things

 She goes on: 'I'm enjoying being a mother so it's like going back to my old job, and it's a little strange.
'But it's important that you don't lose yourself and still have your own passions. And so I'm back to work, I'm back to business.'
Beyonce is also seen in dance rehearsals in the five-minute video, with her choreographer helping her get back into the swing of things.
'We're basically warming her up and getting her back into shape,' dancer and choreographer Danielle Polanco says to the camera.

Rapist knocked out secretary's teeth in brutal attack after meeting her on plentyoffish.com dating website

A rapist who launched a 'horrific' attack on a secretary after meeting her on a free internet dating website was jailed for 12 years today.
Peter Ramsey, 26, went on a date with the 27-year-old woman after the pair met on Plentyoffish.com but attacked her when she refused him a kiss goodnight.

Inner London Crown Court heard Ramsey punched her to the ground, ripped off her tights and sexually assaulted her before taking her underwear as a trophy.
The victim said she thought she was going to die during the brutal attack which left her unrecognisable with 21 injuries and one of her front teeth knocked out.

She has been left with facial scarring and still has to undergo counselling to help her deal with flashbacks of her ordeal last August.
Sentencing Ramsey to 12 years, Judge Patricia Lees condemned the 'horrific and gratuitous' attack on a 'trusting and genuinely delightful young woman'.

She said: 'You met your victim on the internet and arranged a first date having given a false name.

'You arrived having taken not a penny with you, only an Oyster Card. You told her you were a student so she paid for everything.
'She was a trusting and delightful young woman whose life will be altered forever by what you did that terrible night.'

The pair had spent four days chatting on the free dating website - which claims to be ‘responsible for more dates and more relationships than any other dating site’ - before arranging to meet for drinks in Brixton, South London, last August.

The court heard Ramsey charmed her on the dinner date, which went well, but as soon as he walked her to her home in nearby Clapham he turned ugly.

Outside her flat he leaned in for a kiss and when she pulled away he pinned her against a wall and showered punches on her face until she collapsed on to the floor.

When she screamed for help he covered her mouth with one hand while continuing to beat her with the other, leaving her in fear of her life, telling the court: 'I thought I was going to die'.

Ramsey met his victim on the online dating website plentyoffish.com, which claims to be 'responsible for more relationships than any other dating site', but attacked her when she refused a goodnight kiss on their first date

Ramsey then raped her and left her bleeding on the pavement as he stole her bag and used her Oyster card to catch the night-bus back to the flat he was staying in Forest Hill, South London.

His victim was left crying out for help and was discovered by a passer-by. Her mother, who had heard the screams, rushed out to find her badly injured and traumatised. 

 Judge Lees said it was likely Ramsey’s 'sexual pleasure' was heightened by the extreme violence he inflicted on his victim.

She told Ramsey: 'She was attacked by you when she refused to kiss you. You immediately punched her to the ground. You inflicted repeated blows. You pushed her down the stairs and badly raped her on them.

'Throughout your attack you prevented her from screaming for help by putting your hand over her mouth and holding her with your other hand. As a passing gift you stole her handbag.

'You left her badly injured and thoroughly degradated and content with that you callously stole her handbag and used her Oyster Card to get home. The effects on your victim have been profound.'

Ramsey denied the charges but was found guilty by a jury at Inner London Crown Court in Southwark

The next day Ramsey left two messages on his victim’s mobile phone telling her he was sorry and had sobered up. He was arrested a week later after a DNA match and CCTV footage showed him on the bus near the scene.

Ramsey, who boasted that he had been out with hundreds of women, told police the sexual intercourse had been consensual and that he had left the young woman arguing with another man who must have beaten her.

He denied rape, wounding and theft, but was found guilty by a jury at Inner London Crown Court. He has continued to deny the offence.

After the verdicts investigators said she had some of the most shocking injuries they had ever seen and warned that it highlights the importance of thoroughly vetting internet dates.

The court heard Ramsey had a 'tragic upbringing' after his violent father caused her mother to suffer a fatal brain haemorrhage, leaving him homeless, his defence barrister Leslie Manning told the court.

Ramsey, who has convictions for shoplifting and assaulting police, was jailed for a total of 12 years for rape, four years for wounding with intent to run concurrently and six months for theft to run concurrently. He will also be on the sex offenders’ register for life.
